24th April 2010 - Thornbury catch Berkeley napping in early game

With leaders Highridge United not in action today, Thornbury Town had the chance to move within one point if they could win at Berkeley Town.

With the kick-off being brought forward to 2pm and a beautiful afternoon for watching football the scene was set. Thornbury who are a very good unit and work tirelessly for each other never looked in any danger of losing this game as they opened the scoring after just 15 seconds with a brilliant goal from Ukrainian Artem Azytskyi who caught Berkeley keeper Ewan Prentice well of his line and lobbed the ball over him from 35 yards. Thornbury almost got a second 7 minutes later as Rikki Lippiatt’s header struck the upright rebounded to Steve Alexander who saw his goal-bound effort pushed over the bar by Prentice. The visitors were well on top and a second goal came in the 18th minute as Matt Morrison picked up a loose ball nipped past two defenders and slipped the ball through to Pete Fowler to drive the ball past Prentice from just inside the box. Prentice made up for his early mistake with two brilliant saves to keep his side in the game. In the 37th minute a 30 yard free kick from Steve Thompson was again well saved by the home keeper. Berkeley had been stifled of chances and a half hearted effort was wasted by Nick Button. The action was all in the Berkeley half and two more brilliant saves from Prentice a shot from Artem Azytskyi was pushed away and the rebound from Steve Thompson was also pushed over the top.

Berkeley’s best chance came in the 52nd minute as Langford tried forcing the ball home only to see Sam Lippiatt’s last ditch tackle deny the striker. Thornbury keeper Alex Lippiatt had to be at his best to punch the ball clear from an in-swinging corner. Thornbury went further ahead in the 59th minute as Azytskyi threaded the ball through for Steve Alexander to fire the ball past Prentice striking the post on its way in. The visitors were well on top and breaks down the right by Danny Thompson caused the home defence allsorts of trouble with penetrating crosses that should have been netted. In the 78th minute a cross from the right was turned in by Dan Wood just crossing the line as Prentice tried to scoop the ball out. The final goal came in 86th minute when Ashley Lloyd broke down the right and sent over a low cross for Steve Thompson to drive home from close range.

Patchway Town moved a step closer to safety with a 1 – 0 victory over local rivals Henbury. Young Danny Webb went close twice in the first half missing the upright by just inches. Henbury failed to create any chances whilst Patchway enjoyed good spells of possession without the final product. The only goal of the game came in the 67th minute after good work from Brad Harris on the right who put through a ball too Mark Palmer down the line and his cross found Young Dan Webb to head home.

Les James League Cup finalists Taverners enjoyed a slender 1 – 0 victory over Chipping Sodbury Town at Nailsworth but they are still only one place off the bottom and only two points behind Berkeley Town with a game in hand. Taverners enjoyed the early exchanges and might have take the lead after ten minutes when a free-kick into the box found Mike Thornton who’s shot was cleared off the line. A few minutes later Craig Mills saw his 25 yard shot deflected and Mike Thornton headed over from the resulting corner. Chipping Sodbury’s first attempt on goal saw Lee Gardiner attempt to round the keeper but Portlock fended him off with his legs and then turned to secure the loose ball. In the 25th minute Jay Redbond missed a glorious chance to give the home side the lead. Then a break down the right by centre-back Ian Preece who’s cross into the box found Redbond who laid it back for Mills who then fired over the bar from close range. The only goal of the game came in the 62nd minute when a long kick from keeper Portlock was headed back by Redbond to Harsant who chipped the ball over the defence and Redbonds miscued shot trickled through the goal-keepers hands into the net. In the 70th minute Sodbury could have drawn level when a shot from outside the box caught Portlock off his line and the keeper only just managing to flick the ball over the bar at the last moment. The chance of the afternoon came when Tom Hanley missed a sitter from 8 yards with just a few minutes remaining.

Bottom club Ellwood suffer yet another defeat this time at the hands of Hanham Athletic. Although the score-line was 0-0 at the break, Ellwood had created chances but had failed to capitalise. A second half hat-trick from James Laver on 46, 53 and 80 minutes with a fourth goal from Richard Bray in the 50th minute secured the points for the visitors.

Brimscombe and Thrupp good home form continued with a 2 – 0 victory over Yate Town Reserves. Both goals coming in the first 45 minutes, the opening goal after 28 minutes from Chris Underwood, a cracking shot after Jamie Martin had put him clear on goal. Provider Martin then became goal-scorer as Ben Jones’s pass set him up to crack home a 20 yard volley.

Bishops Cleeve Reserves form took a turn for the better as they came away with a 2-0 victory at Rockleaze Avonside. It remained 0-0 after 45 minutes and the opening goal was headed home from a right wing cross by Sam Strickland after 70 minutes. Rob Allen then secured the three points for the visitors as he tapped in a low cross from the left in the 85th minute.

Tuffley Rovers keep up their challenge for the title with a 2-1 victory at King Stanley. Tuffley opened the scoring as early as the 10th minute when the home defence failed to clear a simple ball into the box and Pete Thomas smacked the ball home from ten yards. They went further behind in the 20th minute when a long ball from the left to the far post was met by Warren Mann who slipped round the defender to fire home past Gavin Dean. Stanley should have pulled a goal back when Mercer created a great chance which Matt Casey headed wide. Stanley’s second half performance improved and pressurised Tuffley’s defence in the early stages. This paid off in the 55th minute when the Tuffley defence got into a mix up and it let Matt Casey in to score. The home side threw everything at Tuffley to try and level the score but to no avail.

17th April 2010 - Highridge grind out win over Ellwood

Bottom club Ellwood faced a daunting task after their 1-1 draw in the week at Rockleaze they now had to face league leaders Highridge United. Highridge had to make several changes to their line up as three of their regular players were out injured.

The game itself was difficult with both sides having to cope with a hard pitch and the ball bouncing around everywhere. Neither side helped the cause by continually playing long balls instead of trying to get the ball down on the ground.

The first sign of a chance came after 11 minutes when Elwood’s Martin Reed saw his effort go wide of the post. United’s first venture on goal was a cross from Ryan McKillop that was headed wide by Dale Cottle. McKillop almost got on the score sheet with what would have been a bizarre goal as he charged down an attempted clearance by the Ellwood defence that ran past the keeper but wide of the goal. Both Micky Adams and Dominic Graffagnino got their shots on target but not good enough to beat Lee Barnard in the visitors goal.

The home side should have opened the scoring in the 50th minute but Adam Winstone headed over with the goal at his mercy. Within a minute Winstone made amends for his miss with a superb strike from the edge of the box that flew across goal into the far corner. Mitch Kavanagh had a good chance to increase the lead but headed over from a corner. The second goal for Highridge came in the 75th minute from a free kick that Dale Cottle took from around 25 yards, he struck the ball into the middle of the goal Ellwood’s defence failed to clear and the ball fizzed into the net leaving keeper Barnard unsighted. The visitors never gave up and were rewarded in the 83rd minute when a free kick out wide on the left was turned in by Martin Reed.

Thornbury Towns visit to Henbury was very rewarding as they came away with a 3-0 victory. A spokesman for Henbury said that they were beaten by a better team on the day. Thornbury took the lead when their new Ukrainian signing Artem Azytskyi netted. A Dan Thompson volley from outside the box gave the visitors a 2-0 lead and they rounded it off when Steve Alexander netted a third after a good break down the left.

Patchway Town continue to climb the table after recording their third win in a row. Their 3-0 victory over Bishops Cleeve in the week was followed today with a 4-2 victory at Berkeley Town. The visitors opened the scoring on 9 minutes as Bradley Harris drove a low shot home. Next on the score sheet was Mark Palmer with the first of his two goals a shot from the edge of the box. Nick Rugman volleyed home number three on 24 minutes, but just before the break Berkeley pulled a goal back, Peter Langford netting from the penalty spot. Berkeley got it back to 3-2 with a Paul Brooks strike in the 54 minute but a second strike from a free kick by Mark Palmer gave Patchway the 3 points.

Bishops Cleeve Reserves poor run of results continued as they went down 2-1 at home to Brimscombe & Thrupp. Jamie Martin’s cross was turned in by Matt Blyth to give the visitors the lead on 15 minutes and Cleeve’s Jamie Lock should have levelled 3 minutes later but for a fine save by the visitor’s keeper. The home side drew level 5 minutes before the break when Nick Rhodes headed home Henry Durrant’s cross. Within a minute Brimscombe were in front again when Jon Dalton netted. The second half failed to produce any further goals.

Chipping Sodbury Town were 2-0 up at the break in this home fixture with near neighbours Kingswood. Lee Gardiner picked his spot to give them the lead on 24 minutes and a 30 yard screamer from Ollie Clarke made it 2-0 after 38 minutes. Kingswood hit back in the 69th minute with a Gavin Dibden header bur Alex Fox made it safe with a third for the home side in the 74th minute.

Axa must be ruing the two goal lead they had acquired and numerous missed chances as they were defeated 3-2 at home by Kings Stanley. There were no goals in the first 45 minutes. Axa took the lead on the hour after some good inter passing between Richard O’Kelly and Dan Griffiths, O’Kelly getting the finishing touch from 12 yards. Andy Watts and Dan Griffiths then combined to set up Dan West for the second on 70 minutes. Stanley pulled one back through Ben Newman who netted from 15 Yards in the 82nd minute and a minute later were level with Mike Beckingham getting on the score sheet. The winner for Stanley came in time added; again it was that man Beckingham who stole the show and the points for the visitors.

D.R.G. Stapleton failed to score for a second time in three days after their goalless draw at home to Rockleaze Avonside. After the disappointment of going out of the Les James League cup Semi-final on penalties last Wednesday they were hoping to bounce back with a win today. Both teams should have scored in this game but with Rockleaze having a goal disallowed for offside and D.R.G’s Tom Dailly hitting the crossbar and other chances going begging it just was not to be for either side.

10th April 2010 - AXA snatch points at Kingswood

Kingswood lose 2-1 at home to Axa after going a goal behind and then equalising 2 minutes from the end only to see Axa snatch the points in the very last minute of the game.

Kingswood keeper Chris Fox was almost beaten by the bounce from a Richard O’Kelly shot after 14 minutes he just managed to scoop the ball over the bar. Paul Armstrong went close for the visitors with a neat chip that just missed the upright. At the other end a mistake by keeper Dave Hill almost let the home side into score. Then Dan Griffiths was just pipped to a long ball by the home keeper Chris Fox. Axa were definitely the better side at this stage using the long ball to good effect and target man Noel O’Sullivan winning everything in the air. The home sides first real chance fell to Tom Higgins who got behind the Axa defence but could not control the bounce of the ball and hit his shot wide.

Early in the second half Axa took the lead a free-kick was floated into the box by Andy Watts, Noel O’Sullivan got his head to it but it was deflected past Fox by Kingswood’s Gavin Dibden Dibden tried to make up for his mistake and saw his goal-bound shot deflected out for a corner. Then a miss-kick by Tom Higgins could well have been the equaliser but it went just wide. A great cross from Paul Bleaken was just to far in front of Dibden as he flung himself at the ball. Axa’s Andy Watts was unlucky when his 18 yard drive struck the crossbar. A rasping shot from sub James Pellow brought the best out of home keeper Fox. At the other end Hill brought of a brilliant save to deny Paul Bleaken’s free kick going in. Noel O’Sullivan should have put Axa further in the lead when he was clean through on goal but Fox smothered his shot. With just 2 minutes left Gavin Dibden levelled with a shot from 12 yards out, but straight from the kick-off Axa broke down the right, the ball was played into O’Sullivan who slipped it through for James Pellow to fire past Fox.

Thornbury Town gained a 3-2 victory over Bishops Cleeve Reserves although the home side fell behind after 15 minutes as Sam Strickland strode through the Town defence to score. Pete Fowler levelled things up on the half hour mark when he headed home a cross from the left. Just before the break Steve Thompson was brought down in the box and then got up to net the spot kick. The visitors brought the score level again in the 70th minute through Jamie Lock, but Thornbury snatched the winner ten minutes later as Steve Alexander rounded a defender before driving the ball home.

Patchway Town move of the bottom of the table with a 1-0 victory over D.R.G. Stapleton at Scott Park. Town thought they had taken the lead on 13 minutes as Kris Sage was put through to score but he was just offside. Then John Pugsley struck the crossbar. In the 40th minute Matt Webb put Nick Woodman through on goal but a last ditch tackle by Rob McArthur was adjudged to be a foul by the referee resulting in a penalty. Mark Palmer stepped up to take the penalty and dully despatched it past the visitor’s keeper. In the second half the visitor’s offered up a couple of token efforts by Tollo Taylor that both cleared the bar and the home side were ecstatic about the result at the end.

Ellwood drop to the bottom of the table with a 1-0 defeat at home to Tuffley Rovers. It was never a classic with a goalless first half and a very few chances. Ellwood missed a good chance to take the lead in the 70th minute and paid the price 5 minutes later when Richard James scored from the penalty spot to give Tuffley the three points and move them back into second spot in the table.

Hanham Athletic took the lead at Brimscombe with a goal from Tom Buxton-Blyth on 35 minutes but the home side hit back to level when Jamie Martin finished off a great move between him and Jon Dalton The visitors had a great chance to retake the lead but Jay Owens shot missed the target. Jon Dalton then gave the home side the lead as Gary Probert combined to give Dalton the chance to score. Brimscombe rounded of a good day as Jamie Martin netted his second to give the home side the three points.

In the local derby between Yate Town Reserves and Chipping Sodbury Town the home side ran out 1-0 winners in what was described as a very scrappy game. The only goal came after 5 minutes netted by Grant Brown from a Jake Cox free-kick.

Berkeley Town went down 2-0 at home to Kings Stanley, both goal coming in the first half. Aiden Mercer was brought down in the box by Ewan Prentice after 19 minutes and then netted the spot kick and Luke Barstow headed home from a free-kick in the 44th minute. The nearest the home side came to scoring was a Richard Langford effort that just cleared the bar.

Taverners lost 1-0 at home to Henbury with a late goal from Luke Walker that the spokesman said looked offside, but there was no flag. Earlier Tom Hanley saw his shot saved by the visitor’s keeper pushing the ball around the post. Henbury’s Eddie Howells also had Portlock at full stretch to prevent a goal. Taverners did have good chances to score as Craig Mills saw his volley skip just the wrong side of the upright and Hanley could not believe the visitor’s keeper’s save as he again just managed to finger tip the ball out from his low shot

Highridge United march on as they record yet another win this time over Rockleaze Avonside. Rockleaze opened the scoring on 30 minute when Rob Neill chipped the visitor’s keeper, but it was short lived as Highridge were on level terms after 35 minutes with a 30 yard strike from Micky Adams. It remained all square until the 70th minute when substitute Adam Winstone gave Highridge the lead from close in. Highridge wrapped the points up in the 80th minute when Micky Adams headed home at the far post. The surprise of the day was a missed penalty by leading goalscorer Shane Hobbs.

5th April 2010 - Highridge extend lead at top of table

A new venture for the league staging a full fixture program on a Bank Holiday and what a success it turned out to be. Out of the nine fixtures staged seven clubs experienced very good attendances most of which were well above the average.

The match of the day was undoubtedly the clash between third in the table Thornbury Town and leaders Highridge United at the Mundy Playing Field. It was also the highest attendance on the day 103 spectators. Thornbury Town were on a very good run of form having won seven out of the last eight games the other was drawn. Whilst Highridge United were on a ten game run, having won nine and drawn one, their last defeat came at Kingswood on 23rd January. Thornbury opened the stronger side and Danny Thompson unleashed a terrific shot from the edge of the box which saw Johnson scurrying across goal to collect. Then Ashley Lloyd let fly from 20 yards but his shot cleared the bar. The visitors soaked up the early pressure and began to push forward and should have taken the lead on 13 minutes when a cross from the right flew behind the Town defence and there was Micky Adams with an open goal staring him in the face, but some how he contrived to fire wide of the target from 8 yards. It was such a glaring miss I don’t think any one could believe the ball did not find the back of the net. Two minutes later Highridge went ahead, Town gave away a free kick on the edge of the box out on the left and Shane Hobbs drove a low ball into the near post that caught keeper Rob Malcolm out and Adams nipped in to guide the ball into the bottom corner making up for the miss a couple of minutes earlier. Danny Thompson had another good shot on target but Johnson was there to gather cleanly. The visitors were now showing everybody why they lead the table as Adams was again on target with a header but it was really well saved by Malcolm, finger tipping it over the bar. Another free kick by Hobbs almost brought a second goal as Mitch Kavanagh’s crafty flick almost caught Malcolm out but the keeper pushed the ball over the bar. Highridge took a deserved 2-0 lead on 37 minutes as Gary Cripps neatly flicked the ball in at the near post from yet another Hobbs free kick.

Thornbury started the second half a lot better and should have pulled a goal back as Danny Thompson was through on goal but then shot straight at Johnson from inside the box. In the 67th minute Johnson had to be at his best as he palmed a tremendous shot from James Derosa away for a corner. The writing was on the wall after 71 minutes when Highridge netted their third, again Hobbs was involved as he curled his corner in from the left and Adam Winstone squeezed the ball into the net.

The game at Henbury started very brightly for the home side when they took the lead after 1 minute 40 seconds centre back Ralph Timms heading home from a corner at the near post. Yate might have levelled 5 minutes later but Justin Cattle’s header was just wide of the post. Henbury were having a good deal of possession but were not able to turn that into chances. There was a big scare on 34 minutes when a tremendous drive from Yate’s Grant Brown almost squeezed through Phil O’Connells legs but the keeper turned sharply to recover the ball before it crossed the line. Lewis Hughes then saw his shot hit the outside of the post and go out. Yate took control of the second half and Alex Lambert almost levelled but O’Connell made a great save. The equalising goal for Yate came in the 61st minute as Ryan Couzens was put clear to drive the ball home. O’Connell then brought of another save to deny Justin Cattle getting on the score sheet. Town took the lead in the 71st minute when Dempsey’s pass found Ashley Lock who hit a superb shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards. The visitors could well have had a couple more towards the end when Cattles shot was blocked and Dempsey’s chip had the keeper beaten but went wide of the post. Henbury did manage a last ditch attempt to level but the final shot from Luke Walker was brilliantly saved by keeper Adam Growcott.

Tuffley Rovers 2-1 defeat at home to Brimscombe and Thrupp has opened up a 6 point gap between them and the leaders. In a pretty even first 45 minutes the home side grabbed the lead right on half time as Leone Cornwall chipped the visitors keeper from 12 yards. Brimscombe hit back on the hour mark with a good strike from Pete Smith and then went on to steal all the points in the 82nd minute with a 30 yard pile driver from centre back Gary Probert.

Kings Stanley got back to winning ways with a slender 1-0 win at home to Rockleaze Avonside. Stanley had a lot of the possession but could not break down a very stubborn Rockleaze defence. Mike Beckingham had his low shot cleared off the line and at the other end Rockleaze almost took the lead as keeper Gavin Dean was wrong footed from a shot that took a deflection but fortunately for him went the wrong side of the post. Stanley also had Luke Barstow’s header cleared off the line. With both sides failing to make any inroads Stanley brought on Matt Casey and it turned the game as a free kick was floated into the box and Casey left unmarked headed home.

Patchway Town slip further into the mire as they are again go down 4-1 at home this time to Axa. The visitors took the lead after just 4 minutes as Dan West volleyed home from a corner. 5 minutes later Axa were 2-0 up when Ciaran Greening headed home. John Pugsley had the Axa keeper at full stretch to keep the ball out on 25 minutes, but a third goal on the half hour from Andy Watts put the visitors well in control. Town did pull a goal back in the 40th minute when John Pugsley set up John Rugman to score. The game was dead and buried for Patchway in the 53rd minute when Matt Shaughnessy netted a fourth for the visitors.

Berkeley Town did themselves a big favour with 3-0 home successes over strugglers Ellwood. The star of the day was Richard Langford who netted all three goals for the home side. He opened the scoring on 32 minutes when he broke through the Ellwood defence to slot the ball under the keeper. His second came early in the second half when he turned on the edge of the box and drove a low shot into the corner. His final strike came in the 88th minute as he was put clear to round the keeper and tap the ball home. Berkeley were well on top for most of the game and missed numerous other chances to score.

Hanham Athletic bounced back from their defeat on Saturday with 2-0 win over Chipping Sodbury Town. Town who have been playing really well recently held Hanham to 0-0 in the first 45 minutes, but the break through came on 55 minutes as Darren Burt scored from close range. A second 10 minutes later a shot from 18 yards by James Laver was enough to keep Hanham’s hope’s alive of finishing in the top two.

The game at Kingswood who entertained Bishops Cleeve Reserves ended in a 0-0 draw.

A warm up for the Semi-final of the Les James League Cup between D.R.G. Stapleton and Taverners also ended goalless.

3rd April 2010 - Thornbury keep good run going

Yet another disastrous Saturday for football as the heavy rain once again put pay to five of the seven fixtures scheduled.

The two fixtures that went ahead were down to the staff of both clubs working very hard to stage their games.

After spending most of the morning wondering whether I would be able to watch a game I was informed that the Hanham Athletic v Thornbury Town was going ahead. It was a mad dash over to Hanham and we arrived 10 minutes late, but thankfully there had been no score on our arrival.

The pitch looked in very good condition considering the amount of rain that had fallen and both teams who were third and fourth in the table at the start of play were looking to play the ball around on the deck rather opting for the long ball It was very competitive and both defences were in good form cancelling out the forward lines attempt to break through. The home side did muster up a couple of shots on target early on and might have taken the lead on 28 minutes as a cross from the right was neatly headed goal-wards by James Shopland but it flew straight into the hands of Towns keeper Rob Malcolm. It looked as though the half would finish goalless until a 44th minute when a goal for Thornbury broke the deadlock. A shot had come in from deep it was almost deflected past the home keeper by one of his own defenders and he just managed to push it around the post for a corner. The corner was hammered low across the box and Dan Thompson drove the ball home from just inside the box.

Hanham almost levelled in the 54th minute as they got in behind the Thornbury defence the shot being pushed over the bar by Malcolm. The second Thornbury goal came from that save by Malcolm and the resulting corner for Hanham which was hoofed up field flying over the home defence and dropped nicely for Steve Thompson to place the ball past the keeper. Town were beginning to get on top at this stage and a long range shot from Dan Thompson was only just wide. Hanham again got in behind the Thornbury defence and this time Richard Grinter attempted to chip Malcolm who was at full stretch to flick the ball over the bar. Thornbury made sure of the points after 83 minutes as a break down the left by Tom Webb who fed the ball to Sam Lippiatt to cross into the box and Ashley Lloyds shot struck the inside of the post before nestling in the back of the net. This was a very good game to watch well refereed and there was not a sign of a yellow or red card throughout the game.

Chipping Sodbury continue their recent improved form with a 2-0 victory over visitors Brimscombe & Thrupp. A spokesman for Sodbury said that the pitch was very wet right from the outset but both teams acquitted themselves well trying their best to keep the ball on the deck. Sodbury took the lead on 10 minutes when a cross from Darren Andrews was headed home by Alex Fox. Both sides continued to play the ball about but the score remained 1-0 at the break. In the 60th minute Sodbury were handed a slice of luck or misjudgement if you like as the visitors keeper came to gather a long ball but realised that he could not get there and back pedalled but was beaten by a cross come shot from Danny Coombes that flew over his head into the net.
