27th March 2010 - Henbury snatch win over Rockleaze

The game at Arnall Drive between Henbury and Rockleaze Avonside never really got going until late in the second half and after falling behind the home side hit back to win 2-1 with a Billy George goal in time added on.

The first half produced very little in the way of goal-scoring opportunities with a free kick from Rockleaze Avonside’s Steve Mason blasting the ball over the bar after 10 minutes. Then Jack Bebbington and Billy George saw their efforts fly wide of the target. Phil O’Connell was called upon to save a free kick from Steve Mason just before the break. The best chance fell to Rockleaze just before the break when a cross came in from the left and Neil Simons miss timed his header and it flew wide of the post.

The game continued in the same vein until the 75th minute when Rockleaze were awarded a free kick on the left side of the box. Phil Sergeant floated over a perfect ball for centre back Aaron Day to head past O’Connell It looked very much as though the visitors would steal the 3 points then in the 80th minute an opportunity opened up for Eddie Howells to drive the ball across Pullara into the far corner. At this stage both teams I believe would have settled for a point apiece but Henbury struck a cruel blow in added time when Adam Rosser's low corner was neatly met by Billy George and the striker drove the ball into the bottom corner from just inside the box. Within a minute the referee brought the game to an end.

Highridge United continue to hold top spot with a 3-1 win at Kings Stanley all the their goals coming from leading goal-scorer Shane Hobbs. In the early stages Stanley took the initiative and keeper Johnson had to be at his best to prevent any score. Highridge had the ball cleared of the line by Stanley defender Paul Webster and at the other end Martin McDermott missed a glorious chance to give the home side the lead. Ben Newman then hit the visitor’s side netting with a great shot. In the 44th minute Ben Newman was brought down in the box for a penalty to Stanley and Aiden Mercer netted from the spot. The visitors hit back immediately with Shane Hobbs netting the equaliser in time added in the first half. Stanley were on top for the early part of the second half and missed several really good chance before Highridge who always looked dangerous going forward took the lead in the 70th minute when Hobbs drove home his second following a cross into the box. Stanley went looking for the equaliser and was caught out in the very last minute as Hobbs netted his third of the afternoon.

Patchway Town bottom of the table almost brought of the surprise of the day when they found themselves leading 1-0 against visitors Tuffley Rovers who snatched a draw 5 minutes into time added on at the end of the game. Town had taken the lead when John Pugsley was put clear by Clayton Clark early on. Tuffley had their chances and went close with a header that was just wide of the upright. Pugsley had a marvellous chance to put the home side 2 up in the 40th minute but clear on goal shot straight at the keeper. Just before the break Town’s keeper Martin Alford saved the day with a great save to deny Rovers levelling. Towns Brad Harris might well have increased the lead and Pugsley saw his shot well saved by the visitor’s keeper as the ball rebounded of the post straight into his arms. Rovers snatched their point 5 minutes into time added when a free kick was parried by Alford but Victor Webb was on hand to knock the ball home from close range.

Brimscombe & Thrupp took a pasting at home to Kingswood going down 5-0. Ryan Mudd netted a second after the home defence failed to clear from a corner. Dibden then netted his second before the break from the penalty spot. The home side almost pulled a goal back but Jamie Martins shot struck the crossbar. Brimscombe’s manager Phil Baker made three substitutions to try and change things around but the move did not work as Kingswood got a fourth when Tom Higgins broke free. Then in the 80th minute Gavin Dibden hammered the final nail in the coffin when he completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

Berkeley Town pulled off a much needed 3-0 win against visitors D.R.G. Stapleton. Andrew Hobbs opened the scoring after 32 minutes as he netted from 6 yards. The second was a great effort from Richard Langford on 78 minutes as he robbed the defender of the ball before rounding the keeper to drive the ball home. 3 minutes later the home side made 3-0 when Shane Gage put Ben Gillison in to score from close range. The visitors had their chances and Town’s keeper Miles Palmer at to be at his best to deny a brilliant shot from Leon Cozens. The visitors were awarded a dubious penalty on 42 minutes but Ricky Gingell blasted the ball over the bar. Femi Balogun had his shot well saved by the home keeper the rebound falling to Tollo Taylor who blasted hit effort over the bar.

Taverners go down again losing 2-0 at home to Hanham Athletic. Although there were no goals in the first half both teams had chances but failed to take them. Hanham took the inactive in the second half and opened the scoring on 50 minutes a Jack Rivers free kick taking a slight deflection as it nestled in the back of the Taverners net. Within 5 minutes they were 2-0 up Craig Roberts brought James Laver down in the box for a penalty. Laver took the spot kick and sent keeper Portlock the wrong way. Taverners had a chance to get back in the game on 75 minutes when Russell Chamberlain was brought down in the box. Mike Thornton took the penalty, but it was brilliantly saved by the visitor’s keeper. 20th March 2010 - Malcolm saves day for Thornbury

Thornbury Town may have taken the 3 points at Kingswood with a 3-2 victory, but they have to thank their goalkeeper Rob Malcolm for pulling off 3 great saves in the early part of this game. His first save was to dive to his left to push away a Tom Higgins shot after quarter of an hour. Then James Evans was right through on goal but Norman narrowed the angle and he pulled his shot wide. In the 21st minute Malcolm pulled off another double save firstly from Ryan Mudd’s shot then the ball rebounded to Gavin Dibden who saw his goal-bound effort saved by Malcolm Thornbury’s game is to defend deep and hit their opponents on the break and they almost took the lead in the 25th minute as a through ball sent Steve Thompson away clear on goal and only a brilliant save by the home keeper Chris Fox prevented them taking the lead. Fox was in action again this time to save a Jack Barnes long range effort. After soaking up the early pressure Thornbury grabbed the lead with a brilliant piece of individual skill from Steve Alexander bring the ball under control turning and firing the ball past Fox from just inside the box. The home side should have been level after 34 minutes but Paul Bleaken missed a great chance from 14 yards out. Town looked the better side just before the break and a shot from Sammy Lippiatt was just over the bar and a cross laid back from Alexander saw Steve Thompsons shot strike a defender to divert the ball wide of the goal.

Thornbury took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when a mistake in the home defence allowed Dan Thompson to drive the ball home from 6 yards. Kingswood made the score a little tighter when they pulled a goal back with just a minute left a strike from close range by Paul Bleaken.

Goals galore at Yate Town Reserves. After racing into a 3-0 lead they eventually landed up losing 5-4 to visitors Brimscombe & Thrupp. Yate opened the scoring after 15 minutes when George Brimson drove home the rebound from a Ryan Couzens shot. Couzens made it 2-0 on the half hour when he picked up a Justin Cattle rebound to beat the visitors keeper. Brimson then set up Ashley Lock for the third after 38 minutes. Lee Pritchard then lobbed the keeper to pull a goal back for Brimscombe and John Dalton made it 3-2 two minutes before the break. It was Dalton again on 50 minutes to level the score before Justin Cattle then gave the home side a 4-3 lead. Then two goals from Jack Cannon in the 70th and 80th minute put the visitors in front. Yate still had chances to level but Justin Cattle was guilty of missing the chances.

13th March 2010 - DRG through to league cup semi-final

DRG Stapleton progressed to the Semi-final of the Les James League Cup competition with a 3- 0 home win over Bishops Cleeve Reserves. Tristan Ferguson should have opened the scoring for DRG after 12 minutes but he blasted his shot over the bar from 8 yards. Liam Powell then had a good shot on target but keeper Dan Greenhouse made a good save. There was almost a spectacular opening goal on 18 minutes when centre-back Tollo Taylor hooked the ball towards goal from 30 yards out, it beat Greenhouse hit the upright, spun across the goal line hit the other upright and then rolled out for a goal kick. The visitors managed their first attempt on goal after 26 minutes but the ball was pushed away for a corner by keeper Neil Hanson. The home sides Tom Dailly had two really good chances to give them the lead but his shots were wide of the target. Cleeve started the better side in the second half and put DRG under a considerable amount of pressure but with all their effort they failed to make a break through. Ben McGuire had a good chance on 54 minutes to level the score when he was right through on goal but had his shot blocked by a last ditched tackle from Ricky Gingell. The home side went 2-0 up in the 67th minute when a long ball up field found Tom Dailly who cut inside the full back and hammered the ball past Dan Greenhouse. Just after this goal there was an incident in the centre of the field involving quite a few players from both sides and it resulted in Bishops Cleeve Dan Wallington being sent off. This blow put an end to any come back for the visitors and a third goal in the 87th minute Leon Cozens driving home Grant Woolsey’s cross. DRG Stapleton will now meet Taverners in the Semi-Final at Slimbridge on Thursday 25th March.

Bottom club Patchway Town took a real pasting at home to League leaders Highridge United going down 7-1. All the damage was done in the second half as Highridge were only leading 1-0 at the break with a volley from Micky Adams after 4 minutes. Patchway Town even levelled the score 3 minutes into the second half when Matt Webb was put clear to hammer the ball goal-ward and although keeper Johnson got his hands to the ball he couldn’t prevent it going in, from that point on it was all Highridge. Shane Hobbs made it 2-1 in the 52nd minute when he went on a mazy run rounding the keeper and sliding the ball home. 3 minutes later Micky Adams got his second from a cross from Craig Liddell. And then Dominic Graffagnino netted from the edge of the box to make it 4-1. A penalty from Craig Liddell in the 83rd minute added to Patchway Woes, the player himself was brought down in the box by Mark Wood and he got up to score from the spot. A couple of minutes later Hobbs netted his second when he was put clear to chip the ball over Alford as he came out. Nicky Pratten who had come on a sub then netted number seven right at the end.

Thornbury Town move into third place with an excellent 3-2 over Yate Town Reserves. Jack Barnes opened the scoring after 2 minutes when he picked the ball up just outside the box and passed several defenders on his way to slot the ball home. In the 30th minute Yate should have equalised but George Brimson missed from the penalty spot. 5 minutes Yate made amends when they equalised through Deon Noakes as he latched onto a long ball and just managed to squeeze it past the keeper. Right on half time Thornbury took the lead as Yate failed to clear a corner and the ball falling nicely to Steve Alexander to knock past the keeper. The home side went further ahead in the 61st minute when a 30 yard chip from Jack Barnes after the keeper’s poor clearance. Yate pulled a goal back in the 80th minute when Dominic Holver cut into the box and was brought down and this time George Brimson netted from the spot.

Surprise of the day and after the lord Mayors show from their mid-week cup success King Stanley were defeated 1-0 at home by Henbury. In a game that created very few chances from either side in which both sides huft and puffed and never seemed to get anywhere, the deadlock was broken in the 75th minute when a break down the right by Henbury and a long cross to the far post where Luke Walker headed home.

Ellwood’s dismal form continues with a 3-0 home defeat by Chipping Sodbury Town. The home side were again guilty of missing numerous chances in the first half and paid dearly when Lee Gardiner opened the scoring for the visitors in the 50th minute. Five minutes later Gardiner was on target again to make it 2-0 although the home side were still creating the odd chance they failed to find the back of the net and in the 88th minute Paul Harris popped up to score number 3 for the visitors.

Brimscombe & Thrupp thrashed Axa 5-1 although the way this game started with Axa taking the lead after just 2 minutes with the very first attack on goal, Matt Baird gave them the lead. But within a minute the home side were level, a long throw from Lee Pritchard was headed on by John Davies and Gary Probert driving the ball home. John Dalton made it 2-0 with a header after the ball had rebounded off the cross bar. Right on half time Lee Pritchard increased the lead when he picked the ball up ten yards outside his own box ran the full length of the pitch and with the Axa defence stationary he hammered the ball home from 20 yards. Gary Probert then got on the score sheet again after he had exchanged passes with Dalton, Probert knocking the ball home from close range. The final goal came in the 75th minute when Lee Pritchard netted his second with a tremendous shot from the edge of the box, the ball whipping across goal just inside the post.

Tuffley Rovers followed up their 4-0 success over Taverners in midweek with a 2-0 win at Berkeley Town. The visitors opened the scoring just 2 minutes before the break when Eddie Weyman forced the ball home from close range following a corner. In the 58th minute Weyman was on target again as he drove the ball in from just inside the box. Rovers should have made it 3-0 on 65 minutes from the penalty spot, but Victor Webb missed for the second time in a week.

Hanham Athletic bounced back from their heavy defeat in the cup last week with a 1-0 win at Rockleaze Avonside. The only goal of the game came in the 85th minute from James Laver who broke down the right cut inside and drove a low shot just inside the far post.

Taverners are feeling just a tad unlucky as they went down 1-0 at home to Kingswood. The home side might have taken the lead on 25 minutes as the Kingswood keeper pulled of two great saves to deny Tom Hanley and then Mike Thornton. 5 minutes before the break Taverners Ian Preece missed the easiest chance of the game as he was put clear on goal but with just the keeper to beat he blasted the ball over the bar. Just before the break Gavin Dibden had a great chance to give the visitors the lead but spurned the opportunity. Taverners had several half chances in the second half but misunderstanding between several player cost them dearly. Taverners defender Paul Jennings almost gave Kingswood the points as he made a mess of clearing the danger and his clearance struck the crossbar and went out. The final blow came in the 90th minute when Gavin Dibden latched on to a cross and drove a firm left footed shot into the corner of the net.

Stanley took the lead in the 8th minute when a terrific shot from Eion Szuejkowski had keeper Adam Growcott diving to his right to prevent his low shot hit the back of the net, but the ball spun away from the keeper to the left of the goal and straight to Ben Newman to drive the ball home.

The Yate defence were caught cold again a minute later as Stanley’s captain Martin McDermott cut into the box on the right and drove a low shot across Growcott into the far corner.

6th March 2010 - Henbury hit Berkeley for six

The game between 3rd and 4thfrom bottom, Henbury and Berkeley Town was a six pointer for either teams but it was Henbury who ran out 6-2 winners. After 10 minutes the scores were level at 1-1 and you would not have envisaged the final score. Henbury took the lead in the 3rd minute when Mike Reece gave away a penalty and Luke Walker made no mistake from the spot. Walker might have increased that lead when he was through on goal but a last ditch tackle by John Neate took the ball off Walkers toe. Berkeley were well in the game at this stage and levelled the score after 10 minutes, a long ball up the middle found Paul Brookes who hammered the ball past keeper O’Connell from the edge of the box. Henbury’s Jack Bebbington saw his 25 yard shot fly just over the bar then in the 29th minute Henbury went 2- 1 ahead when Adam Rosser’s cross from the left found Billy George who slid the ball past Palmer. In the 36th minute a mistake by Berkeley’s Mike Preece allowed Billy George to latch on to the ball and round the keeper going wide to the left before turning his left foot shot into the net.

In the 55th minute it looked as though George would complete his hat-trick but he was pulled back by a Berkeley defender but then broke free and with just the keeper to beat he shot wide. In the 70th minute the home side went 4-1 up when another great cross from Adam Rosser was headed home by Luke Walker. Henbury were well in control and limited Berkeley to long range efforts the first one coming from Richard Reece who’s shot flew over the bar. Although the visitors had very little impact in the second half they did grab a second goal in the 75th minute with a brilliant 20 yard drive from Richard Langford which whipped into the roof of the net. Within a minute Henbury were 5-2 up, when Billy George’s in- swinging corner from the right was headed home by Ross Johnson. At this stage the home side looked dangerous every time they went forward and in the 79th minute a break down the left by Walker and a superb cross that followed allowed Joe Fyfield to hammer the ball into the Berkeley net to make it 6-2.

In the 89th minute Taverners pulled a goal back after a scramble in the Yate goalmouth with Ian Preece poking the ball home.

Chipping Sodbury Town came from a goal down to rescue a point against Rockleaze Avonside at the Ridings. Rockleaze took the lead after 12 minutes when a mistake in the Sodbury defence allowed Kai Simpson room in the box to score from close range. Sodbury fought their way back and in the 75th minute an Alex Fox free-kick found defender Liam Barrett to strike home the equaliser.

Thornbury Town continued to climb the table with a 2-0 victory at Brimscombe & Thrupp both goals being scored in the first sixteen minutes of the game. Steve Alexander opened the scoring for Thornbury in the 15th minute and a Jack Barnes goal a minute later put Thornbury in a commanding position. Although in the second half Brimscombe were much better, crucial missed chances by Jack Cannon and Chris Murray cost the home side dearly.

Tuffley Rovers are still in there challenging for the title with a 3-0 home victory over DRG Stapleton. Marcus Foxwell opened the scoring for the home side after 12 minutes when he fired the ball into the roof of the net from 8 yards. After 26 minutes it was 2 – 0 as Centre-Back Ashley Davies headed home a Warren Mann cross. Tuffley went 3-0 up just before the break, when a free-kick from Marcus Foxwell was brilliantly headed home by Richard James from the edge of the box.

Axa’s poor run of form continues as they were well beaten 4-1 by league leaders Highridge United, leading goal-scorer Shane Hobbs netting all four. It was Axa who opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Mike Burnett’s cross into the box found Jing Yuan Cai who turned and drove a low shot past the keeper. But it all went down hill from there as Hobbs levelled the score on 30 minutes against the run of play, Hobbs was brought down by Steve Winter who received a second yellow card for the offence and was sent-off. Hobbs netting from the spot. Right on half time a cross from the left was misjudged by the Axa keeper, the ball falling nicely for Hobbs to rattle in his second. In the 50th minute bad defending by Axa allowed Micky Adams to get in a telling cross for Shane Hobbs to complete his hat-trick. The visitors wrapped the game up in the 65th minute when Hobbs broke into the box and after several attempts at goal that was blocked eventually fired the ball home.

The game between Kingswood and Ellwood failed to produce any goals over the 90 minutes but Kingswood would rue the chance of taking all three points when in the 46th minute Tom Higgins was brought down in the box and Gavin Dibden’s penalty struck the crossbar and went over. Except from this glaring miss both sides were glad to share a point each.

A dramatic ending at Bishops Cleeve Reserves as Kings Stanley’s Luke Barstow was seriously injured in the 86th minute which held the game up for forty minutes while the ambulance arrived to take him to hospital with a suspected broken ankle. The game itself ended in a 1-1 score-line with both goals coming in the first half. Both sides missed early chances in the first 20 minutes then Cleeve opened the scoring on the half hour when Richard Barnes squared the ball across the box for Sam Strickland to score from close range. In the 36th minute Stanley were level as Mike Beckingham curled his free-kick around the wall into the bottom corner. Bishops Cleeve had two good chances to have taken the lead but were both missed by John Cant. In the 72nd minute Stanley’s Eoin Szuejkowski missed a sitter from six yards. Ten minutes later came the injury and when play resumed both teams played the remaining time out.
