24th November 2012 - Frampton and Southmead draw first meeting

The inclement weather condition succeeded in claiming six of the eight fixtures scheduled for today. Just two fixtures survived and the results of the two games played had an affect on the top of the table. Southmead CS Athletic dropped points at Frampton United but Kings Stanley’s win at home to Rockleaze Rangers moves them into second place in the table. Tuffley Rovers remain top on goal difference and now have a game in hand over their rivals, having not played for the last two weeks.

The game between Frampton United and Southmead CS Athletic was the first meeting of the two Clubs elected to the Gloucestershire County Football League this season. This definitely was a game of two halves. Southmead being the much better side in the first 45 minutes. With Frampton responding well in the second half. Missed chances from the visitors in the first half turned out to be costly.

Home keeper Craig Barnfield was tested early on when he managed to push away a Rob Sivers 30 yard free kick in the sixth minute. Frampton’s first effort on goal came after 15 minutes was a free kick from Frazer Wilson that landed on the roof of a house some 50 yards behind the goal. Southmead’s Gary Booth went close in the 19th minute after receiving a pass from Leon Simpson the Player/Manager curled his shot at goal but it did not have quite enough swerve on it as it clipped the outside of the upright. Just a minute later the deadlock was broken. Frampton gave away a free kick wide on the right that was pumped into the box headed clear out to the left where Danny Glancy struck a tremendous low shot from the edge of the box that whistled past everyone and into the bottom corner of the Frampton net. Barnfield looked on helplessly as the ball sped past him. Rob Sivers had a great chance to make it 2-0 to the visitors but just failed to reach the ball in time as Barnfield raced off his line to clear. It was Rob Sivers again in the 40th minute that could have increased their lead when he was put clear on goal but never quite got his shot right and allowed Barnfield to dive full length and push the ball away. Frampton barely got out of their half and when they did their efforts were all stifled by the Southmead defence.

The home side made a couple of changes for the start of the second half and Adam Philp was one of them. There was no doubt that he made a big difference to the way Frampton performed in the second period. Frampton thought they had leveled in the very first minute of the second half when Karl Palmers shot from the edge of the box looked a goal all the way but over exuberance from Philp who was in an offside position cost them dearly as he helped the ball on its way even though it was going in. In the 63rd minute a long ball up the middle found Philp who rounded his defender before unleashing a tremendous shot that if it had been lower would definitely gone in, but it clipped the top of the crossbar. The home side kept pushing forward and both Adam Philp and Player/Manager Lee Driver-Dickerson had shots on target. In the 74th minute a scramble in the box resulted in Karl Palmer’s shot being blocked by the legs of visitor’s keeper Sebastian Gribble. Gribble was in action again in the 80th minute making another good save this time from Tom Patterson. Frampton eventually got a well deserved equaliser in the 82nd minute as Adam Philp squeezed his way into space to slot the ball past Gribble. Frampton went looking for a winner and it almost came with just 3 minutes left as Adam Philp got on the end of a superb cross into the box but then headed straight into the arms of Sebastian Gribble. One final shot from Karl Palmer right at the death went just wide of the post.

Kings Stanley took the three points by the narrowest of margins against Rockleaze Rangers winning the game by one goal to nil. This was enough to put them in second place level on points with Tuffley Rovers but having played a game more and an inferior goal difference. Stanley dominated the first half, but missed numerous chances that could have seen them well clear by half time. They did however, take a six minute lead when a cross into the box from Tom Pass seemed to deceive everyone and finished up in the back of the Rockleaze net. Tony Oakey should have made it 2-0 on 25 minutes but probably chose the wrong option and eventually drove his shot straight at the visiting keeper’s legs. Other chances were also missed during the first period of play but some of them were certainly down to the poor weather conditions on the day. Rockleaze did not offer much throughout the whole game and will be disappointed with their performance. Mike Beckingham who had come on as a substitute for the home side near the end, missed a glaring one on one situation that would have eased tension amongst the home side.

17th November 2012 - Chipping Sodbury and Yate draw derby clash

With leaders Tuffley Rovers out of action due to a waterlogged pitch it gave Southmead CS Athetic a chance to take over at the top of the table, but they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol Academy. Kings Stanley and Ellwood share 3rd & 4th place with Stanley just in front on goal difference.

The local derby between Chipping Sodbury Town and Yate Town Reserves ended in a 2-2 draw. The first effort on goal after 4 minutes came from Kirk Waldron’s free kick after Jack Parker was brought down on the edge of the box, but the resulting shot was blasted high over the bar. Just two minutes later Sodbury took the lead. Justin Cattle dinking the ball over Damien Freemen. The pattern of play then changed as both sides won the ball and then give it away again before being able to build a good attack. Yate’s first real shot on target after 35 minutes was well struck by Liam Monelle but not good enough o beat home keeper David Mead. A free kick just outside the box for Yate was taken by Jason Henley but his shot went straight to the keeper. Just before the break Dan Clement broke clear on the left for Yate and stuck a fierce shot on target that Mead did very well to save.

Yate started the better of the two sides in the second half and got a deserve equaliser in the 55th minute. Jordan Greenwood found space on the left to send over a dangerous looking cross into the six yard box that was deflected into his own net by Ricky Hemmings. In the next couple of minutes Yate might have grabbed the lead as Kirk Waldron’s shot went just over and then a well directed header from Waldron struck the crossbar. Marc Hughes made the task harder for Sodbury in the 70th minute when he got himself sent of after kicking out at Liam Monelle. In the 75th minute against the run of play a long ball up the left found Craig Davidge who sprinted past the Yate defender and sent a brilliant drive into the far corner for a 2-1 lead. Yate continued to push forward and got a well deserved second goal in the 82nd minute Jordan Greenwood turning in a free kick drove into the box from the right.

Southmead CS Athletic failed to take the opportunity to go top after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol Academy. The young Academy side were the better team throughout the first 45 minutes with their slick passing and always trying to build from the back. They took a deserved lead on 30 minutes when Tyler Finch-Vassell drove a low shot into the corner from just inside the box. The home side showed a marked improvement at the start of the second half and were given the chance to level the score in the 65th minute from the penalty spot. Terry Caswell was given the job and coolly drove the ball home. The home side applied extra pressure near the end but the visitors defended really well and went away with a well earned point.

Taverners visit to Ellwood ended in a 3-0 defeat with all three goals being scored by Matt Addis. Ellwood took this game by the scruff of the neck and were two goals up after just 3 minutes. Then a third goal in the 65th minute saw the Forest team home and dry.

Rockleaze Rangers defeat at Longlevens was soon forgotten as they romped to a 5-2 home win over Frampton United. The visitors must be feeling down after two successive wins in the last two weeks then suffering a heavy defeat. Frampton started really well and opened the scoring after 2 minutes James Cross was put clean through on goal to slide the ball past Burgess. Rockleaze were level after 18 minutes with Shane Budding setting up Matt Beadle to score from 8 yards. In the 38th minute Rangers went further ahead Aaron Day netting from the penalty spot after Shane Budding had been brought down in the box. Two minutes before the break it was 3-1 to the home side. Savas Frangoulis hit a tremendous shot from 40 yards that struck the cross bar and the rebound was picked up by Jesus Herran Boix to score. In the 58th minute a cross into the box by Shane Budding found Carl Lakey to make it four. Frampton hit back a minute later as Zak Tyers slid the ball home from a low cross. Rangers replied straight away and went up the other end where Shane Budding fired home number five.

Thornbury Town got back to winning ways with a 3-2 victory over visitors Bishops Cleeve Reserves. Town took the lead after 3 minutes with a little luck as Steve Alexander’s shot took a wicked deflection and finished up in the back of the Cleeve net. Town went two up on 10 minutes this time Ross Irwin put Alexander free to rifle the ball home. Cleeve hit back in the 35 minute with a close range shot from Declan Chick. Thornbury got a third goal just before half time Steve Thompson heading home and at this stage against the run of play Alexander almost grabbed his hat-trick but his shot struck the cross bar Cleeve made the final score look close but the last goal only arrived three minutes from the end scored by Ben Robinson.

Kingswood slip up again this time going down 2-0 at home to Hanham Athletic. Lenard Miller had a great chance to score for Kingswood after rounding the keeper and was about to slid the ball home, when it was taken off his foot by a great tackle from Jack Baber. Kingswood had several good opportunities to take the lead but then fell behind on 36 minutes when Shaun Morris put Adam Grinter clear on goal to put the visitor’s one up. An 18 yard drive from Mike Saddler on 48 minutes put the visitors 2-0 up and although the home side did create chances they were unable to find the back of the Hanham net.

The local derby between Henbury and Patchway Town produced five goals with the odd goal going to Henbury to give them a 3-2 win. The home side started really well and took the lead in the 4th minute with a George Watts strike. Patchway hit back in the 37th minute from a 40 yard run down the right and a cross into the box that was met by James Hicks to level. Jack Mills restored the lead for Henbury two minutes into the second half driving home a Gary Clark cross. Parity was restored on the hour with a Matt Tovey header, but the winning goal for Henbury came in the 80th minute, an absolute scorcher from Jack Mills, volleying home Ryan Innoles superb cross to the edge of the box.

Due to heavy overnight rain in the Gloucester area the games between Tuffley Rovers v D.R.G Frenchay and Longlevens v Kings Stanley were postponed.

10th November 2012 - Taverners see off Berkeley

Tuffley Rovers win 2 – 0 at Yate to go three points clear at the top. Southmead CS Athletic remain in second but were beaten 2 – 1 at Patchway Town. Kings Stanley win the battle for third and fourth place with a 2 – 0 victory over Kingswood whilst Ellwood slip into fourth place to displace Kingswood on goals scored.

At the bottom of the table Taverners were the only club to pick up points with a 2 – 0 win at home to Berkeley Town.

Our first visit to Taverners this season to watch a game between two struggling teams at the bottom of the table ended with a 2-0 victory over Berkeley Town. A very uninspiring game with very few chances created and lots of midfield play both teams struggling to score goals. A first effort on goal came after 6 minutes a shot from Taverners Matt Spring on the edge of the box that went over the bar. They did however take the lead in the 15th minute when a ball that split the visitors’ defence found Tom Ind breaking clear, and firing a low shot past Ewen Prentice in the Berkeley Goal. Berkeley’s first effort on goal came in the 20th minute from Sam Strickland who could of done better but his final shot was easily collected by home keeper Duane Portlock. Scott Northover was the next on target for Berkeley his 25 yard shot taken well by Portlock. A Luke Palmer shot in the 40th minute almost got Berkeley on level terms but Portlock pulled off brilliant diving save. A minute before the break a brilliant piece of covering by Taverners Centre Back Mike Thornton prevented Sam Strickland a clear run on goal.

Taverners started the better of the second half and Prentice had to be at his best to prevent Rory Gardiner netting a second. The best scoring chance of the afternoon for Berkeley came the 53rd minute when James Mackie was clear on goal but rushed his shot which enabled Portlock to parry the ball and then recover it as it ran wide of the goal. Richard Reece had a half chance in the 74th minute when he met a corner from the right but headed the ball wide of the target. Taverners grabbed a second in the 80th minute when a chip into the box was heading straight for Prentice but Matt Spring nipped in between the keeper and the ball and headed into an empty net.

A seven goal thriller at Bristol Academy with Frampton United taking the three points with a 4 – 3 victory. On a very heavy pitch the visitors opened the scoring after 7 minutes when Zack Tyers picked up a rebound off the post from a James Cross shot. With in four minutes the home side were level when Carl William’s cross was driven home by Jordan Lawrence. Frampton hit back in the 30th minute to re-take the lead with a 25 yard shot from Steve Jackson. United went further ahead two minutes before the break when a Zack Tyers cross into the box, was misread by the Academy defence, giving James Cross an easy opportunity to net number three. A minute later a Jordan Lawrence corner was punched clear by the visitor’s keeper, the ball dropping nicely for Mario Mateus to pull the score back to 3-2 at the break. Three minutes into the second half the Academy were level as Jordan Lawrence broke down the flank sent over a great cross for Ibrahima Diallo to fire home. A second goal from Frampton’s Zack Tyers in the 70th minute grabbed all three points for United.

The local derby between Patchway Town and Southmead Athletic ended with a 2-1 victory for the home side, this was the second meeting between the two clubs, the first encounter a few weeks ago in the GFA Trophy also ended with a victory to Patchway Town. The opening goal for Patchway came in the 25th minute, when Brandon Benjamin dummied a great ball on the right side of the box making himself a yard of space to fire home into the bottom corner. Southmead were back on level terms on 35 minutes but the events surrounding the goal saw the goal scorer Dale Simpson being knocked unconscious. The build up to the goal was a save from the Patchway Keeper Martin Alford who palmed the ball onto the bar and as it fell he tried to clear with his feet and caught Simpson accidentally in the head, the ball finished in the back of the net and after a short delay Simpson was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. Patchway re-took the lead 5 minutes before the break when Dan Bendall was through on goal and was impeded by the goal keeper resulting in a penalty, Mark Palmer duly netted.

After two defeats the previous two weeks Kings Stanley found their form with a 2-0 victory over Kingswood. The home side were the better team through-out and should have took the lead early on when a one on one situation involving Liam Gale and the visitors keeper Chris Fox ended with Fox making a really good save with his legs. Stanley did however take the lead in the 20th minute when Steve Robertson’s shot was blocked by a Kingswood defender but rebounded to Danny Stephens to fire home. In the second half Fox was in action again as he pulled off another good save from an Andy Maryon header and then minutes later denied Scott Robertson. A second goal late on by Danny Stephens settled the result in favour of Stanley.

Longlevens dented Rockleaze Rangers recent good form with a 2-1 home victory. It was a scrappy game in the first half with only one really good chance falling to Rangers Carl Lakey whose header was brilliantly saved by home keeper Lee Martin. Longlevens started the better of the two teams in the second half with both Brad Martin and Ryan Dunn going close but it was Rangers who took the lead on the hour when a cross into the box was accidentally turned into his own net by Dan Moore. The home side only trailed for five minutes as Ryan Dunn’s pull back from the wing was met by Shaun O’Connor to equalize from 8 yards. In the 78th minute the home side grabbed the winner a cross from Craig Beaton was met by Ryan Dunn whose shot was well saved by Rangers keeper but popped up to the unmarked Shaun O’Connor to slot home.

Ellwood slipped into fourth place with a 1-0 victory at DRG Frenchay. Ellwood thought they had taken the lead early on when they had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for a foul on keeper Lee Francis. 31 minutes into the game they did take the lead, a cross from the left found Matt Addis whose powerful header gave Francis no chance. The home side’s second half performance was much better but they failed to break down a stubborn Ellwood defence and failed to break the barren spell and go down to their third successive home defeat.

Hanham Athletic bounce back after some indifferent form in the last few weeks with a 2-0 win over Thornbury Town. Thornbury fell behind after 20 minutes when James Shipman broke clear of the Town defence and rounded the keeper before slipping the ball into the net. A Second goal five minutes before the break, a cross in from the right that was headed home by Adam Grinter broke the barren run.

Bishops Cleeve Reserves dented Chipping Sodbury Town’s revival chances with a formidable 4-1 home victory. Four goals in the first 36 minutes saw the home side take a very convincing hold of this game. They opened the scoring on 12 minutes after a through ball spilt the Sodbury defence and Declan Chick ran clear to score from 12 yards. A second goal ten minutes later came from a cross from Declan Chick that was sliced into his own net by defender Brad Hackett. Just two minutes later Sodbury were in real trouble as the home side made it three after a defensive error allowed Declan Chick to rob them of the ball and run clear to score. The luck was definitely not with Sodbury today as a low corner from Jamie Lock sped into the six yard box where Sodbury’s Mark Totterdell unfortunately sliced a second own goal into the net. Sodbury scored a consolation goal with ten minutes to go when Bishops Cleeve gave away a free-kick for a pass back, Craig Davidge struck the ball against the wall the ball spinning up for Ben Hemmings to head home (continued)

Yate Town Reserves find themselves third from bottom in the table after going down 2-0 at home to league leaders Tuffley Rovers. Rovers went into the lead after 13 minutes with a Richard James goal with all the home defence appealing for off-side. A second goal 15 minutes from the end by Glen Gittings doomed Yate to another defeat and sealed Rovers place at the top of the table.

3rd November 2012 - Kingswood held by Longlevens

The weather put pay to 5 fixtures leaving just 4 games being played.

With both Tuffley Rovers and Southmead CS Athletic having their games called off, it was a chance for Kings Stanley and Kingswood to close the gap at the top. Kings Stanley lost at home for the second week running this time 3-1 to Thornbury Town and Kingswood were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Longlevens.

Kingswood got off to a flying start against Longlevens going in front after 3 minutes from a mistake by the visitors keeper Lee Martin who failed to collect a shot from outside the box and Ryan Mudd had the simple task of slipping the ball into an empty net. The visitor’s first effort on goal after 12 minutes came from a Lee Blackmore effort that just cleared the crossbar. Disaster, for the visitors on 16 minutes when keeper Lee Martin handled outside the box and was dismissed by the referee, outfield player Dan Moore taking over in goal. Going down to ten men spurred the visitors on and Brad Martin was put clear on 21 minutes and should have scored but pulled his shot wide. The home keeper Chris Fox then saved well from Ryan Dunn and he was in action again several minutes later pulling off a good save to deny Brad Martin. Longlevens leveled the score on 38 minutes from a long free kick into the box that found Brad Martin to drive low shot past Fox. Three minutes before the break Kingswood were caught out again from a Longlevens free kick that sped into the box split the defence and Shaun O’Connor nipped in to slide the ball past the advancing keeper. The ten men had looked the better side for most of the first half and deserved their lead.

The visitors should have increased their lead in the 53rd minute but a great cross from the right was headed wide by Brad Martin from six yards. Kingswood made a couple of changes and introduced Gavin Dibden and Leonard Miller to the attack and it paid dividends as the home side began to control more of the game, Longlevens defender Craig Martin came to the rescue on two occasions heading certain goals off the line the second a superb chip by Simon Clarke. The constant pressure from Kingswood was rewarded in the 82nd minute from a great cross from the right by Miller to Simon Clarke who controlled the ball with his chest and stroked the ball past the keeper to make it 2-2. The home side had a great chance to steal the three points in the 89th minute when Longlevens Craig Martin fouled Ryan Mudd in the box which resulted in a penalty. Gavin Dibden took the kick and made a hash of it as he pulled his shot wide of the target.

Frampton United ran riot at home to Patchway Town finding the back of the net on seven occasions without reply. The home side went ahead in the first minute as Steve Jackson found Kris Bulley out on the wing and his cross into the box was headed home at the far post by Zak Tyers. The Patchway defence held firm until the 50th minute when the home side made the second break through. Gianni Diurno sent a cross into the box that was headed on by Dan Huxstep for Steve Jackson to drive home. Five minutes later Jackson netted his second this time it was Frazer Wilson who set it up with a good low cross into the box. In the 60th minute Patchway went down to ten men when Zak Tyers drove into the box was brought down from behind, denying a goalscoring opportunity the defender had to go. Frazer Wilson then took the spot kick to put the home side 4-0 up. Nathaniel Wood made it five in the 65th minute as his powerful header was caught by the visitor’s keeper who then fell back into his own net. Tom Patterson stabbed the ball home to make it six in the 85th minute and a break down the right by Stuart Maule in the very last minute rounding the defender before sending in a low cross that the keeper was unable to hold and Player Manager Lee Driver-Dickerson was on hand to slide the ball home.

Chipping Sodbury v Hanham Athletic produced seven goals with visitors Adam Grinter netting a hat-trick, but it was not enough for his side to salvage any of the points. Justin Cattle opened the scoring for the home side after 7 minutes and were well in control at this stage. Hanham equalised on 24 minutes after a mix up in the home defence allowed Adam Grinter to head home the first of his three goals. The visitors then took the lead on 30 minutes with a great shot from Grinter. After going a goal down so early the visitors had hit back to go into the break with a 2-1 lead. The home side got back on level terms in the 50th minute with a Craig Davidge strike and a minute later Mark Hughes finished off a great move by the home side to put them back in front. The visitors were not finished and Grinter completed his hat-trick on 56 minutes to level the scores once again. Justin Cattle sealed it for Sodbury in the 74th minute when he cut through the Hanham defence to net the winner.

Kings Stanley finished the game with eight players after three players received their marching orders for numerous offences. Thornbury Town gained a second successive away win to help their climb up the table. Thornbury took the lead after 16 minutes from a cross into the box that was headed home by Tom Webb. Dan Thompson then saw his goal-bound shot pushed away for a corner by home keeper Gavin Dean. Ben Newman struck the underside of the crossbar for Stanley but it bounced back into play. Stanley did however; leveled the score just before half time when Nick Humphries slid the ball past the advancing keeper. Nathan Irwin restored Thornbury’s lead in the 60th minute when he broke down the left and fired a shot past Dean from an acute angle. Liam Gayle had a couple of chanced to get the home side back in the game but to no avail. Thornbury sealed the points near the end when Steve Alexander netted a third.
