28^th January 2016 - Gap at top closes as Thornbury lose at home to Kingswood

Another two games postponed today due to heavy overnight rain.

Stonehouse Town were without a fixture so Thornbury Town had a chance to increase their lead at the top and Frampton United to close the gap on the other two.

Two results today saw Bishops Cleeve Reserves and Gala Wilton on the end of a thrashing.

Thornbury Town were at home to Kingswood who has shown good form in recent weeks and a win for the home side would give them a little leeway at the top whilst the visitors could close the gap. It was a tough battle throughout the game with Kingswood closing down Thornbury as soon as any player received the ball. The effort put in by the visitors certainly paid off because they stifled the home side and did not allow them to play their normal passing game. The home side created the first chance on goal a free kick that was met by Nathan Irwin but his header went just wide of the post. Kingswood took a first half lead from a Simon Clarke free kick just outside the box on the right which he floated across to the far post where Ryan Mudd came steaming in to head past keeper Tom Sheppard. Kingswood continued to press and pushed the home side really hard but they managed to keep the score to one –nil at the break.

The visitors continued where they left off in the first half with town having to defend really well. Jamie Evans had a great chance to increase Kingswood’s lead but with a clear shot on goal he hit it straight into Sheppard’s arms. How the home side did not score midway through the second half is a mystery to all as the ball bobbled about in the six yard box before running out for a goal kick. Kingswood got a second goal from a break down the left the ball was hit across to Gary Simmons on the right and his cross to the far post was stabbed in by Frank Hitchings. Evans broke clear again on the left but this time Sheppard brought off a great save to deny the striker. Thornbury staged a late rally and pulled a goal back from another scramble in the box with Nathan Sage getting the final touch. The home side pressed hard and pushed the visitors back in the last few minutes but were unable to get another goal to square the game.

Bristol Telephones who were only two – nil up at the break ran riot in the second half to find the back of the net eight more times. Dhani Golding gave the home side the lead on twenty minutes when he turned in the box after a good cross from Mike Alvis. Golding made it two nil in the thirty fifth minute when he turned in a Martin Blacker cross. Two minutes into second half Martin Blacker scored from close range and in the sixtieth minute a great piece of skill from Dhani Golding setting up James Bacheloto score. Three minutes later Bachelor hit a half volley from twenty yards for his second. On seventy three minutes Mike Alvis’s shot was only parried on its way into the net. Dhani Golding then laid the ball off for Luke Palmer to get on the score sheet. Alvis netted his second when he cut in from the right o drive the ball across the keeper. In the eighty third minute Golding was upended in the box and made it nine – nil from the resulting penalty and with four minutes left on the clock Mike Alvis completed his hattrick with a crisp shot.

A different story at Frampton United where the home side were leading five – one at the break. The home side got off to a great start when Joe Wilton turned in a free kick from Steve Jackson. Another free kick this time sent into the box by Matt Cook was met by Kris Bulley to head home. Gala pulled the score back to two – one on thirty minutes when a long ball was headed home by Kyle Bakewell. Nathan Dennis then headed home a Minolo Marquez Espada corner for the third and on thirty eight minutes another cross from Espada was turned in by Joe Wilton. Jack Bartman rose to head home the fifth on forty minutes again it was Espada supplying the cross. Kris Bulley made it six – one on sixty six minutes and a great run by Fraser Wilson set up Bulley to score again. Matt Cook’s bullet header from eighteen yards on seventy six minutes made it eight and Bulley netted his fourth from just inside the box in time added.

Southmead CS Athletics short journey to face Little Stoke saw them lose after the home side scored a late penalty in the ninetieth minute. The home side had a good chance in the twentieth minute when Sasha Tong set up Frazer Robinson but he hit his shot over the top. It was Southmead who took the lead five minutes before the break when a low corner from the right found Ben Fry to stab the ball home. They held onto that lead until the seventieth minute when Kieran Williams played the ball through to Simon Knight whose shot struck the upright and Owen Greening netted from the rebound. Stoke took the lead on eighty minutes from a corner by Frazer Robinson that found Sasha Tong on the far post to head home. Ollie Bacons long ball was flicked on by Tong who then picked up the loose ball but his shot struck the post. Southmead levelled on eighty five minutes when Ben Fry was brought down in the box and Rob Sivers levelled the score from the spot kick. Then came that killer blow as Owen Greening cut into the box and was brought down. Frazer Robinson took the penalty which was saved by the Southmead keeper but Robinson followed up to net the rebound.

Hanham Athletic took the three points in a close encounter with Henbury. No goals in the first forty five minutes but five minutes into the second half Liam Robson gave the home side the lead with a spectacular overhead kick. It might have been two – nil on eighty minutes but for a superb save from the Henbury keeper from a Luke Simons header. Home keeper Max Heaven made two vital saves to keep his side in front as Henbury pushed hard at the end but failed to break through.

Just the one goal was enough to take the three points at Hardwicke who were hosts to Patchway Town today. The home side were the better side in the first half and took the lead on twenty eight minutes from a Richard Mansell cross headed home by Tobie Webb. Town had much the better of the second period and had several appeals for penalties waved away. The nearest the visitors came to levelling the score was in the very last minute when they struck the crossbar.

21^th January 2016 - Kingswood take chances to beat Bishops Cleeve

Four fixtures postponed today due to over night heavy frost. Stonehouse Town closed the gap at the top with a win over Rockleaze Rangers, with Kingswood jumping up to fifth place after a home success over Bishops Cleeve Reserves.

The weather caused several postponements and changed our venue for today’s visit to watch a match. Kingswood was the chosen destination. The pitch was in excellent condition and both sides knuckled down to try and pass the ball around. The home side took the early initiative and pushed Cleeve really hard but their defence held firm. After defending in the early stages the first real chance fell to Bishops Cleeve on fourteen minutes when Chris Parsons found himself bearing down on goal but keeper Chris Fox made an excellent diving save pushing the ball off Parsons toe twelve yards out. A lot of midfield play took place until the thirty first minute as Jamie Evans picked up the ball just inside the Cleeve half played a superb ball through for Ryan Mudd to run clear of the Cleeve defence and drive the ball past keeper Steve Benbow. Just a minute later Simon Clarke saw his header on target well saved by Benbow.

Cleeve brought on Kieran Smart in the second half and a break down the right by the speedy winger might have given the visitors a chance to level but his cross went speeding across the box with nobody getting on the end. Simon Clarke was brought down twenty five yards out and right in front of goal. Clarke took the kick but failed to penetrate the wall. In the sixty eighth minute Cleeve keeper Benbow almost cost his side a second goal as he tried to clear a back pass and it hit Frank Hitchings as he closed the keeper down, the ball sped towards goal but in his haste to reach the ball Hitchings pushed the keeper giving away a free kick and saving the keeper some blushes. Kingswood caught the visitors defence out in the seventy first minute with a long ball through to Frank Hitchings who ran thirty yards before dispatching the ball into the Cleeve net. Bishops Cleeve were very unlucky in the eighty second minute when Smart got free down the right sent in a cross that was met by Connor Sherry but his shot struck the crossbar.

Stonehouse Town took full advantage of the fact that neither Thornbury Town or Frampton United would be in action due to the weather and closed the gap to one point with a two – one win over Rockleaze Rangers. The home side took the lead on ten minutes as Tim Williams burst through the visitors defence to calmly place the ball into the Rangers net. Rangers might have levelled five minutes later but Steve Fitzpatricks shot cleared the bar. Just before the break Tim Williams had another great chance to increase the lead but failed to take it. Two minutes into the second half Ben Jones put Ryan Stewart clear but it was well saved by the Rangers keeper at the foot of the post. Stonehouse increased their lead from cross from Liam Gale that was firmly headed home by Lee Keveren. Within minutes Rangers pulled a goal back from a forty yard free kick that was floated into the box and met by Steve Fitzpatrick to head the ball past the home keeper Will Pedrick. Williams had another chance in the seventy third minute but the visitor’s keeper did well to keep it out. Lee Keveren was next up with a good chance on eighty three minutes but missed the target. In the last five minutes the home side had at least seven good chances to increase their lead but failed miserably.

Southmead CS Athletic are still looking for that elusive first win of the season and after going into the break all square were undone by two more goals from today’s opponents AEK Boco in the second period. The home side should have opened the scoring on twelve minutes when Rob Sivers set up Kai Holmes but he shot straight at the keeper. Then a minute later they went in front as Luke Bayford’s free kick was headed in by Rio Irwin. Within two minutes Boco were level. Two shots on the home goal were brilliantly saved by home keeper Connolly Jarrett but the ball ran loose to Liam Crewe who slotted it into the bottom corner. In the twenty ninth minute Boco got their noses in front after the ball had deflected of a defender straight to Jack Green to score. Southmead made it two – two just before the break when Rob Sivers volleyed home a Kai Holmes cross. Boco went ahead again on fifty minutes when Jordan Scott hooked the ball home from just outside the box. Then five minutes from the end Darren Werrett scored from close range to secure the points for Boco.

14^th January 2016 - Lebeq United stun Leaders Thornbury

With Frampton United’s game at Hardwicke off Thornbury Town had the chance to increase their lead at the top but they came unstuck at home to Lebeq United.

Meanwhile Stonehouse Town have moved into second place with a draw at Little Stoke.

Thornbury Town’s three – one defeat at home to Lebeq United still leaves them four points clear at the top of the table after twenty games completed. The home side went a goal down after three minutes from a corner to Thornbury that was intercepted by the visitors defence cleared up field to Leroy Swaby who had a clear run on goal from the halfway line to slot the ball past keeper Tom Shepherd. Town hit back on twenty minutes from a quick free kick sent out to Joe Guest and his cross to the far post was met by Pete Fowler to head back across the keeper into the far corner.

Lebeq retook the lead in the fifty eighth minute when they switched the ball from the right across to Elan Plummer on the left and he made space to curl the ball into the top corner. The visitors sealed the points on eighty one minutes from a second strike from the edge of the box by Elan Plummer that Shepherd got his hand to but could not prevent it going in. The home side almost got a second right at the death when Tom Webb squared the ball back for Danny Thompson but he hit his shot straight at the keeper.

Another three points for Broadwell Amateurs with a two – nil win at AEK Boco. It was the home side who created the first real scoring chance on ten minutes when Jack Green cut into the box but his shot was well saved by keeper Jamie Merry. Two minute before the break the visitors took the lead from a free kick that found Greg Lewis and he directed his looping header over the Boco keeper. Boco’s Liam Jenkins had a great chance to equalise right on half time but he shot straight at Merry. It was Jenkins again in the fifty fourth minute who had the chance to level the score but again he failed to beat the keeper. Jordan Scott cleared off the line to keep the score at one – nil in the seventy fifth minute before Broadwell eventually got a second just five minutes from the end with a crisp strike from the edge of the box from Kristian Burnard.

The two bottom Clubs Hanham Athletic and Southmead CS Athletic faced each other at Vicarage Road with the result finishing all square. Southmead picking up only their third point in twenty games completed. In fact the visitors took the lead on fourteen minutes when Rob Sivers turned on the edge of the box and hit a shot that went in off the post. In the forty eighth minute Hanham were left protesting after Luke Bunting was brought down in the box for what they assumed was a penalty but the match official waved play on. Then came two brilliant efforts from Ashley Bowle both of which struck the crossbar. Bowle eventually found the back of the net on seventy minutes with a twenty five yard free kick that flew into the top corner. Southmead were a little under the cosh for the remainder of the game and cleared the ball off the line on two occasions to earn a point.

Rockleaze Rangers got out of jail in the very last kick of the game in the ninty third minute. Earlier the visitors Patchway Town should have opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute when Matt Davies’s effort from close range was stopped on the line by Ashley Palmer. A minute later Rangers Iggy Ilott found himself in acres of space with only the keeper to beat but hit his shot straight at him. Patchway took the lead on thirty two minutes when Matt Tovey broke into the box and was upended the referee awarding a penalty. Tovey dragged himself up and neatly tucked the ball past Sam Burgess. Patchway brought on Ben Dowdell and he missed four great chance in a one on one situation that could have put the result out of sight, but the home side grabbed a point in the ninety third minute when Marcus Williams was tripped on the edge of the Patchway box and James Kenway drove the ball in from the free kick.

Another goalless draw at Little Stoke Park where Little Stoke took on promotion hopefuls Stonehouse Town. Tim Williams should have given the visitors the lead as early as the third minute as he bore down on goal with just Turner to beat but he failed to get the ball past the keeper. Another chance went begging on seven minutes as Ryan Stewart sent a great low cross skimming into the six yard box but there was nobody there to get on the end of it. Then Lee Keveren went close with a shot from the edge of the box. Little Stokes only shot in the first forty five minutes came from Fraser Robertson but it did not have enough pace on it to trouble keeper Will Pedrick.

Twelve minutes into the second half Tim Williams again broke through on goal but once again Turner saved the day for Stoke. Then Stokes Keiron Williams was on target but Pedrick was not troubled. Stoke were much more in the game after the break and Sasha Tong tested Pedrick with a good shot. At the other end Stonehouse struck the crossbar twice in succession and then Stoke almost gave away an own goal with a sliced clearance. In the eightieth minute Stokes Sasha Tong struck the cross bar and from the rebound Pedrick tipped the ball over the bar from Tong. Right on time Turner pulled off a good save to deny Stonehouse substitute Ross Lindley.

GFA Challenge Trophy Quarter-Final

The last team representing the Gloucestershire County Football League in the GFA Challenge Trophy Kingswood travelled to Toolstaion Premier League Cadbury Heath for this Quarter- Final match. The game had been scheduled for a midweek match but unfortunate circumstances surrounding Cadbury Heath’s floodlight being out of action meant it had to be played today. The home side won four – two but not with out a good performance from Kingswood who took the lead on seven minutes when Ryan Mudd hit a sweet shot from the angle of the eighteen yard box into the home net. Just two minutes later Heath were level as Dan Huxley swept home a cross into the six yard box. On thirty minutes the home side got their noses in front when Andy Campbell powered a header into the top corner of the net following a corner. A third goal on forty six minutes from Huxley smashing it home following a goalmouth scramble put the home side well on the way to victory. But Kingswood hit back on the hour when Ryan Mudd headed home from a Simon Clarke free kick. Mudd almost levelled the score on eighty five minutes when his shot struck the upright, but it was not to be as Huxley broke away in the last minute of the game and on the third attempt after Fox had made two brilliant saves he finally got the ball in the net to complete his hattrick.

7^th January 2016 - Kingswood take the points at Henbury

None of the top three Clubs were in action today which gave Bristol Telephones an opportunity to close the gap to five points on third place Stonehouse Town and they still have three games in hand.

The game at Arnell Drive between the hosts Henbury and Kingswood saw the visitors take away the three points with a three – nil win. But it might have been a much heavier defeat for the home side but for some outstanding goal keeping by the Henbury keeper Jake Hannam and some indifferent finishing by the visitors. After Kingswood had taken the lead on four minutes when Jamie Evans slipped the ball past Hannam from a cross to the far post the Henbury team came more into the game and Caelen Simpson battled his way into the box and only a last ditch tackle prevented Henbury levelling. In the seventeenth minute Kingswood almost got a second after some great passing movements allowing Jamie Evans a clear shot at the goal only to see Hannam dive to his left to palm the ball away. The Home side’s first effort on goal came in the eighteenth minute a good effort from the edge of the box from Andy Dickinson. Ryan Mudd must be kicking himself a minute later when he was put clear on goal and with just the keeper to beat he shot straight at him. Then came a good break by Caelen Simpson down the right and a low cross into the six yard box that was stabbed away for a corner. Kingswood had another great chance to double their score on thirty four minutes when Gary Simmons was clear on goal but he to shot straight at the keeper.

Just fifteen seconds into the second half Simmons sent Frank Hitchings clear on goal but the striker struck the crossbar and it was Hitchings again with a clear shot pushing the ball way over the bar. Hannam then brought off a great save to deny Arthur Bennett as he palmed his shot away. At the other end Ross Jonson could not believe his header did not go in as the visitors cleared off the line. A great move down the right by Kingswood’s Ryan Mudd and a superb cross to Hitchings who from eight yard blasted the ball way over the bar. The home side kept plugging away and Reece Purnell got his shot on target but it was not good enough to beat Fox in the visitor’s goal. Another great save by Hannam thwarting another good chance for Hitchings on sixty five minutes. On seventy one minutes Caelen Simpson was only just wide of the target with a header for the home side. Then Kingswood keeper Chris Fox saved well from a Jack Mills shot. The visitors got a second goal on seventy six minutes after Hannam had made the initial save substitute Gavin Dibden lobbed the ball into the net to make it two – nil. A Simon Clarke free kick was pushed away by the Henbury keeper but on eighty minutes Clarke got a third for the visitors with a superb strike from the edge of the box that gave the keeper no chance.

The local derby of the day was Patchway Town v Little Stoke at Scott Park. After a goalless first forty five minutes in which Matt Davies had two glorious chances to score in the twenty sixth and seventh minute, his first effort cleared off the line and the second just cleared the bar. Home keeper Jamie Farmiloe pulled off a great save to deny Stokes Sasha Tong giving them the lead. The home side went ahead on fifty five minute from a difficult header by Matt Davies from a Brandon Benjamin cross. It was Davies’s involvement again on seventy seven minutes being fouled in the box and Matt Tovey doubled the score from the penalty spot. Little Stoke left it late for their goal which came in the eighty eight minute from a cross to the far post which was met by Simon Knight and although Farmiloe got a hand to the shot it deflected of the post on its way in.

Bristol Telephones got off to a good start at Hardwicke when Dhani Golding gave them the lead on seven minutes. Craig Harris should have levelled on eighteen minutes when Ed Rimmer put him clear on goal but he shot straight at the keeper. However the home side levelled the score on twenty five minutes when Tobie Webb put Will Matthews in to lob the ball over the keeper. On forty Two minutes Dhani Golding turned his defender to set up Ben Griffiths to make it two – one. The home side then found themselves trailing three – one on sixty seven minutes after a scramble in the home box Mike Connor squeezed the ball through the keeper’s legs. Hardwicke made it three – two on seventy minutes when Will Matthews headed onto the bar it rebounded to Kieran Squires whose shot was cleared off the line but straight to Ed Rimmer to hit the ball into the roof of the net. Straight from the restart Phones scored again from a cross come shot from Dhani Golding that puzzled the home keeper. Golding completed his hattrick in the eighty fifth minute tapping home a Ben Griffiths cross.

Broadwell Amateurs recorded a four – two victory over today’s visitors Hanham Athletic. The home side got off to a good start and took the lead on ten minutes Ross Gabriel heading home from a corner. The visitors got back on level terms on twenty minutes when a mix up in the home defence saw Steve Collins pick out the unmarked Ryan Phillips to tap the ball into an empty net. Broadwell got their noses back in front on forty minutes when Danny Latham headed home from a corner. The home side went further ahead on fifty four minutes from a twenty yard free kick really well struck into the top corner by Paul Manns. The visitors hit back on sixty two minutes when Ben Francis picked up a poor cross field ball and hit a stunning thirty yard drive into the home net. Jordan Sheen made the game safe for the home side in the seventieth minute running onto a long ball dummying the keeper before sliding the ball home.

A very convincing six – nil win by Lebeq United over today’s visitors Bishops Cleeve Reserves. A Shah Bhakerd hattrick and two goals from Twaine Plummer with the other an own goal. A bad back pass on seven minutes allowed Twaine Plummer in to open the scoring for Lebeq. Then just three minutes later Plummer drifted past three defenders before blasting the ball home for his second. Matt Magee almost got a goal back for Cleeve but a good save by home keeper Amin Jones kept the score at two –nil. On thirty minutes a cross from Twaine Plummer saw Shah Bhakerd volley home from ten yards. A dreadful mistake in the visitors defence saw the ball deflected into the net to make it four on forty minutes. Shah Bhakerd made it five in the sixty fifth minute and then completed his hattrick from a six pass move from defence into attack.

Rockleaze Rangers will be pleased with today’s result at Gala Wilton after slipping down the table in recent weeks. In a scrappy first half in which Rangers just shaded they went into the break with a one – nil lead courtesy of Steve Fitzpatrick. A goal in the second half from Rob Foster saw the visitors secure the three points.

2^nd January 2017 - Little Stoke have the edge over Gala Wilton

With Frampton United out of action today it gave Thornbury Town the chance to increase their lead at the top. Stonehouse Town have moved into second place with an outstanding result at Hanham Athletic.

In the game at Little Stoke Park the home side won this game by a goal to nil. The first fifteen minutes looked promising with the home side taking the lead on eight minutes from a long ball pumped into the six yard box and the Gala Wilton keeper unable to hang onto it as it ran straight to James Laver who had the simple task of knocking the ball home. The home side had more of the possession in the first forty five minutes but failed to create any real good chances. Gala had the better of the possession in the second half but apart from a couple of shots on target that never troubled Stoke keeper Matt Turner all the other shots on goal were wide or went over the bar. A good three points for the home side but with the lack of fire power up front Gala never looked like scoring.

Thornbury Town remain top of the table with a two – one win at home to Broadwell Amateurs. An uneventful first forty five minutes with neither side able to break the deadlock, but ten minutes into the second half the visitors took the lead with a a very good goal from striker Ross Gabriel who created some space before firing into the roof of the net. A cross into the box saw central defender Pete Fowler glance his header in off the far post to level the score. It looked as though the result was going to finish all square then in the last minute of the game Thornbury snatched the three points when Lancastle and Franklin shots were blocked but Danny Thompson picked up the loose ball and squeezed it home for the winner.

The game at Bristol Telephones where Henbury were the visitors today were unlucky when they went down four – three. The first forty five minutes had been dominated by Telephones but found themselves trailing one – nil at the break. The goal came in the very last minute of the first half when the home defence failed to clear a Henbury free kick and Everton Senior had the simple task of tapping the ball home. Just five minutes into the second half Phones were level and it came from a cross from Dhani Golding that found Mike Alvis on the far post to score. Henbury retook the lead just five minutes later when Jake Slocombe drifted past several home defenders before driving the ball home. On sixty minutes Phones were on level terms again after a scramble in the Henbury box Martin Blacker found the back of the net. The visitors went ahead again and it came from a Jake Slocombe twenty yard free kick on sixty three minutes. Substitute James Bachelor made it three – three in the seventy fifth minute after Henbury failed to clear a ball into the box and bachelor volleyed the ball home. Phones grabbed the winner five minutes from the end which was a little lucky as the ball was cleared by the Henbury defence it struck Bachelor and fell nicely for Dhani Golding to sweep home.

Stonehouse Town ran riot at Hanham Athletic hammering the home side eight – one. There was a hattrick for Joe Martin and two for Alex Kibble. Tim Williams opened the scoring for the visitors on thirty minutes with Joe Martin getting his first just five minutes later. Just two – nil at the break the flood gates opened up in the second half. Joe Martin got his second on fifty minutes and completed his hattrick on the hour. Alex Kibble then netted from the penalty spot on sixty five minutes after Charlie Bateman had given away the spot kick. Then on seventy minutes Hanham netted a consolation goal through Steve Collins. Three further goals for Stonehouse Liam Gale with a rasping shot on seventy five minutes a second from Alex Kibble on eighty minutes and the final goal on eighty five minutes from Josh Butler.

A single goal netted by Liam Jenkins on ten minutes was enough to give AEK Boco all three points against today’s visitors Patchway Town. Brandon Benjamin struck the upright for Patchway in the twentieth minute and they had a penalty appeal turned down right on half time. Patchway were reduced to ten men on seventy minutes when Matt Tovey was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card. Boco had one further good chance but Darren Werretts shot was well saved by the Patchway keeper.

Kingswood hit back from a two – nil deficit to gain a point in a two – two draw at home to Lebeq United. Lebeq should have taken the lead on five minutes when Kelvin Williams rounded keeper Fox but then hit his shot against the post. Mid-way through the first half Fox brought off two brilliant saves to deny the visitors taking the lead. Lebeq did however break the deadlock on thirty nine minutes when Kelvin Williams headed home from a corner. A few minutes later Frank Hitchings could have scored for the Kingswood but he headed Simon Clarke’s free kick straight into the keeper’s arms. United doubled their score just sixty seconds into the second half when the home side failed to clear a cross into the box and Shah Bhakerd drove the ball home from twelve yards. Kingswood reduced the arrears on sixty two minutes from a Ryan Mudd surge past two defenders before slipping the ball to Frank Hitchings to score. The home side drew level in the sixty ninth minute as Jamie Evans broke down the right flank and pulled the ball back for Hitchings to side foot the ball home. Hitchings had a great chance to complete a hattrick on seventy three minutes when he was clear on goal but shot straight into the hands of the keeper.
