Sharpness dropped their first points of the season at Wick, but remain, along with Quedgeley Wanderers and Filton Athletic as the only unbeaten sides so far. Chalford, who didn’t play this weekend are the only side without a win, Henbury & Rockleaze and Tewkesbury Town both opening their accounts.

Quedgeley Wanderers continued their impressive start to the season against Bishops Cleeve Development at Waterwells, although they struggled to find any rhythm early on. Riley Stokes fired just over in the 18th minute but possession was being lost too easily making Cleeve’s job of defending a lot easier. QW’s Fin Jenner provided a spark on the half hour with a driving run that created a good chance for him that unfortunately went begging. The second half saw more attacking energy and soon in Seb Keith went on a strong run and shot which Charlie Wilkes dealt with, then Sam Jackson had a good chance cleared off the line. The deadlock was finally broken in the 76th minute with Riley Stokes giving QW the lead. Things were all square on 83 minutes with a well struck Tom de Quincy Adams shot. The QW winner came in time added on with Billy Osabuohien scoring giving them a close 2-1 win.

Wick welcomed Sharpness to The Nest looking to put a dent in their 100% record. The away side started the stronger having plenty of the ball in Wick’s half without causing any real trouble. However, the Sharks eventually struck first when the ball fizzed across the six-yard box, saved by keeper Mason Hawkins but James Tainton was on hand to fire home. Ten minutes from half time Sharpness doubled their lead when a long punt forward cleared the home defence, Tainton brought the ball down brilliantly before beating Wick’s Toby Rennie and firing home for 2-0. Wick started to grow into the game after half time and some good work by Harrison Kyte forced a good save by Sharks keeper Peter Dykes. On 75 minutes Wick had a lifeline when Bayley Rudge delivered a beautiful cross for Cory Langdon to head home. Sharpness remained solid and looked to be heading home with all three points when, two minutes from time Deke Langdon delivered another great cross which forced a scramble in the box and Louis Short was on hand to smash home the equaliser and all square it ended, and The Sharks 100% record was indeed dented, 2-2.

At the Bellfield Frampton United and Tytherington Rocks contrived a pretty uneventful afternoon with few chances created by either team, although a looping header in the 16th minute from Frampton’s Theo Browne landed on top of the crossbar. Rocks Toby Waterman forced Tom Kaye into a good save on 35 minutes and five minutes later they had a great chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot but Kaye saved Waterman’s effort. Frampton’s best opportunity fell to Browne but Nelson in the Rocks goal bundled his shot away. In the closing minutes Rocks Jake Hynes had the final chance of the game but Kaye saved with his feet and 0-0 it ended.

At Elm Park Filton Athletic took on Ruardean Hill Rangers, and it was the home side that started more brightly and took the lead with an unfortunate own goal from a Matt Hoare cross. Filton had chances to add to their lead through Liam Dorman who headed wide Hoare’s cross and then Trey Merrett shot wide. But it was Ruardean who then had a massive chance to equalise when Fin Jones found himself in space after a mistake by Jack Cole, but Matt Berry pulled off a great save to keep Filton in front. Filton doubled their lead before the break when a Liam Dorman shot deflected off a defender to the feet of Kieran Cooper who slotted past Aaron Underwood. A patchy second half, Ruardean did have a chance to pull one back, but the ball punched away by Berry fell for a Ruardean chance which Cole cleared off the line. Ruardean briefly went down to ten with Fin Jones sin binned and they even had the ball in the net but were denied by a foul on Berry. The final chance went to Filton when good work down the left by Tom Fry found Yusuf Abdulrahman whose acrobatic effort went just over. Filton running out 2-0 winners to keep pressure on at the top.

On a warm autumnal afternoon at Arnall Drive Henbury & Rockleaze gained their first win of the season against a youthful Stoke Gifford SGS United side. Gifford started strongly and looked dangerous with plenty of pace in the side, but they failed to create any clear-cut chances with this early pressure, and the first big chance fell to H&R, Jordan Rogers turning the SGS back line only to see keeper Jack Sheppard turn the ball round the post. H&R weren’t to be denied however when Drew Sawdon scored with a diving header from the resultant corner. On 24 minutes H&R’s Sam Bailey drove just over after good footwork Tasman Rook and Tommy Collins. Two minutes later Bailey got through the defence again but was up-ended by Tauren Williams for a penalty which Rogers stepped up for but Sheppard made a good save and the follow up was dealt with by his defence. On 32 minutes Cam Tarr had a header well saved by Sheppard but the same player did score right on half time, driving past Sheppard from six yards after a scramble from another set piece. The second half started quite slowly, however, there was an almighty scramble in the 54th minute where Rogers, Collins and Sawdon all should have scored but good keeping and defending thwarted each effort. On 68 minutes an audacious 35-yard effort from Collins was well dealt with by Sheppard and on 75 minutes he turned another Tarr header onto the crossbar. H&R were assured of the points when substitute George James superbly flicked the ball over Sheppard from a tight angle in the last minute. Three points for H&R by 3-0, and although SGS didn’t create an awful lot they did play their part in a good County League game.

At Pomphrey Hill Bromley Heath United and Broadwell Amateurs fought a very tight affair especially in the first half. Neither side allowed the other to have any prolonged spells of possession, with play being broken up consistently the football wasn’t exactly pleasing on the eye. Broadwell for their part did force a lot of corners in the first period and along with a useful long-throw tactic put some dangerous looking balls into the Bromley box but they were well defended and Broadwell were restricted to a few half chances. In fact, it was Bromley who arguably had the better first half chances to score with Ollie Hammond and Jacob Millward forcing good saves from Jack Watkins. Luke Bessell was also unlucky when his shot hit the post. Broadwell came out for the second half determined to get something out of the game on a ground where they have struggled in previous seasons, and were unlucky not to take the lead when a shot from Ethan Dunscombe was just tipped over the bar by Will Ferguson. The half continued to be very tight but Broadwell just seemed to have the edge and were rewarded when substitute Rhys MacPherson broke through to slot home at the near post. Bromley tried everything to get an equaliser but it wasn’t to be and the final whistle came too soon for them and the three points went back to the Forest 1-0.

On the last Saturday in September, Tewkesbury Town got their first win of the season against Totterdown United at Northway. Whilst the scoreline shows 1-0 it could have been significantly more even by half time. Guilty of missing a couple of clear-cut chances in the opening fifteen minutes Alex Roder finally got his tally off the mark midway through the half, when a long ball forward by keeper Isaac Parry was not dealt with by the Totts defence and with the keeper Ashley Martin saving the initial effort Roder followed up for 1-0. The first half continued with Town having numerous chances to extend their advantage. Some sort of response by Totts in the second half never materialised and Town continued to dominate and should really have added to their tally. As time drew to a close Totterdown committed more men forward but Tewkesbury’s backline held firm and indeed Parry never had to make a save all game. An easier three points for Tewkesbury than the 1-0 scoreline suggests.

A game of few clear-cut chances at The Lawns where Cribbs Reserves took on Hanham Athletic with both teams cancelling each other out and the defences on top for long periods. It was, although, a competitive game with plenty of bite but neither keeper was really tested. A fierce drive from Tom Sayers for the visitors stung the palms of Jude Brown in the Cribbs goal, and then a Dan Monk free-kick for Cribbs was comfortably held by Dan Taylor. A goalless draw and hard to argue with the points being shared.

results

County Cup week, but we had two League games including the two 100% teams meeting each other, which, rather surprisingly Sharpness won a mostly one-sided affair. Tewkesbury Town picked up their first point of the season. In the County Cup it was the end of the road for Wick, Totterdown United and Hanham Athletic, all falling to lower league opposition.

At the Bellfield the top two Frampton United and Sharpness met in a local derby with Sharpness coming out convincing winners. Sharpness started the game the better of the two and James Tainton had a good chance early on but shot straight at Tom Kaye. Against the run of play Frampton opened the scoring on the half hour when a free kick into the box was partially cleared was played back in to Jacob Geddes who neatly turned his defender to score. Frampton then had the better of the game up to half time. Sharpness started the second period strongly and equalised in the 5th minute when a short corner was played in to the back post for Michael Bryant to head in. With the wind in their sails Sharpness took the lead on the hour, a good ball was played out wide for Will Payne to run on to and shoot past Kaye. On 65 minutes the match was well and truly turned on its head when a Bryant free kick was pushed out by Kaye and Callum Dummelow was first to react for 3-1. The Sharks fourth came a minute later, another short corner and Brad Gibbs headed in. On 75 minutes a James Tainton strike made it 5-1 before Harry Churchley’s long range strike pulled one back for the hosts, but Sharpness took the three points 5-2.

At Northway Playing Fields Tewkesbury Town, without any League points hosted unbeaten Filton Athletic. It was a game of two very different halves. Town dominated the first half in large spells and went in 1-0 up with Jamie Goodwin slotting in a 1-on-1 after a long clearance from Lorcan Sheehan. Town started the second half well but Filton grew into the match attacking with intent and pushing the home defence deeper. They equalised on 70 minutes from a Kyle Thomas header with the defence failing to clear. With ten minutes to go Town were reduced to ten for a high challenge allowing Filton to push on for the final stage. Tewkesbury defended their box well and frustrated an organised Filton to gain their first point of the season 1-1.

14th September 2025 - Frampton United and Sharpness maintain 100% start

Frampton United and Sharpness maintain their 100% records and they meet next week. Quedgeley Wanderers are hot on their heels whilst at the bottom Chalford and Tewkesbury Town remain pointless.

Wick welcomed Frampton United to the Nest and it was the away side who got the early advantage on six minutes when a long ball forward from Tom Kaye bounced in the Wick box before Tyler Jaggers slotted into the top corner. Wick reacted well and on 18 minutes some neat work by Sam Archer down the right flank he delivered a cross which Cory Langdon couldn’t quite get on the end of. There was a large pause in play mid-way through the first half as Wick defender Kyle Russell suffered a suspected broken elbow. Play resumed 15 minutes later and in the 39th minute Cory Langdon spotted Kaye off his line and lobbed him from 35 yards for 1-1. Wick were the side in the ascendancy and Kaye made some smart stops from Sam Archer and Mitchell Davies but, against the run of play on 70 minutes Frampton countered and a mistake by Wick’s Toby Rennie allowed Jacob Geddes a chance in the box which he rifled past Kai Wilson. Wick continued to ask questions of Frampton but their defence and keeper held strong and held out for a 2-1 victory to keep them top.

Chalford welcomed Sharpness to Highfield Way in what was Mike Finan’s first home game in charge. The first ten minutes was rather scrappy with the wind making things difficult but it was Sharpness who gained a thirteenth minute lead, a corner was not properly dealt with and Archie Mears hit a great strike from the edge of the box for one-nil. With Sharpness still pressing Sam Neale made a great save from Alfie Jones’ header. On 35 minutes Chalford created their first opportunity with an unbelievable ball from Jack Hughes and Cam Kerr’s header was brilliantly saved by Pete Dykes. On 51 minutes a long throw into the box was not dealt with and Jones was on hand to make it 2-0. Chalford started to get into the game and with twenty minutes to go an Adam Day strike was dealt with by Dykes, but two minutes later he was beaten, great work from Reagan Cross whose ball into the box was volleyed home by Adam Hazel. Chalford had some momentum then and on 78 minutes a great strike by Cross was brilliantly saved by Dykes and Sharpness held on for a 2-1 win maintaining joint top.

At Waterwells Quedgeley Wanderers produced a dominant display to sweep aside Cribbs Reserves and maintaining their very positive start. The breakthrough came inside five minutes when Max Harper-Emerson cut in from the left across the edge of the area and buried his shot into the bottom corner for 1-0. The early pressure continued although Cribbs briefly threatened on the counter before losing control on the slippery surface. QW’s control was rewarded on the half hour. After Finlay Jenner had already gone close, they put together a flowing move down the right and Seb Keith whipped in an inviting cross, the ball fell loose from Harper-Emerson’s challenge to Jenner who slotted in for two nil. Keith nearly made it three, rattling the crossbar as QW remained in command. The second half brought more of the same with Quedgeley dictating the tempo. Reynolds almost made an instant impact but keeper Jude Brown smothered. QW corners were causing constant problems and the woodwork was struck for a second time. With their pressure still mounting QW sealed the game in the 82nd minute, Jenner worked space down the right, leaving his defender sat on the ground before crossing for Keith to make it 3-0. Wells almost made it four when his thunderous strike came of the post and in the closing stages Zee saw his header crash against the bar, and a thoroughly commanding 3-0 Quedgeley win.

After a difficult start to the season Broadwell Amateurs met a good Filton Athletic side at the Hawthorns and continued good progress. Filton came out of the blocks fast creating a few half chances as they controlled the first 15 minutes. Then, came Broadwell’s first chance with Kristian Burnard through 1-on-1 with keeper Matthew Barry who pushed his effort round the post. This started a period of dominance for Well with Jamie Belfitt flashing an effort just wide, then Ethan Dunscombe with a turn and shot which Barry must have seen late and did well to tip the shot around the post. Filton started to show their quality in the second half, creating some decent chances but denied by Jack Watkins. A good game to watch, with the spoils shared, 0-0.

At Hardwicke, Tytherington Rocks dominated Bromley Heath United in a return to League action. Rocks took the leads on the half hour when a ball down the line by Jon Morgan found Ali Al Fadhli who squared for in form striker Ollie Briggs to make it 5 from 5. Rocks had a few chances to double their lead and took just two minutes into the second half to take their chance, Blaine Skuse volleyed in from a miss-kick by Sam Sackett-Springer. It wasn’t to be the keeper’s afternoon, judged to have handled outside the box he received a red card. From the resultant free-kick Tytherington gained a corner from which the substitute keeper punched the ball straight onto Stuart Nelson’s head for 3-0 for a deserved Rocks win.

At Vicarage Road, Hanham Athletic took on Totterdown United who started the stronger of the two sides, and after hitting the inside of the post early on they took a twentieth minute lead with a thunderbolt from Ollie Lovell. It was 2-0 on 35 minutes, Lovell played a sublime through ball for Jack Moon to finish well, past Hanham keeper David Taylor. Hanham worked hard to get back into the game but, were undone on the hour by a fantastic individual goal by Lovell for his second of the game. Hanham forced a couple of corners but firstly Liam Dibble’s header was blocked and then Cade Lovell’s follow up was cleared off the line. So, in the end a fairly comfortable 3-0 Totterdown first win of the season.

Stoke Gifford SGS United took on Tewkesbury Town who started well and were in front inside five minutes when Dan Beasley’s shot was well saved by Jack Sheppard but Nathan Gallaway was on hand to tap in from close range. Town nearly went two up on ten minutes but Gifford cleared their lines and Town being reduced to ten! Gifford took advantage of the player difference and equalised on 15 minutes when Patryk Kosciolek cut in from the wing and placed a well struck shot into the bottom corner. On 18 minutes the game took another turn when a Town player handled on the line and they were reduced to nine, with Kosciolek scoring from the spot. Against the odds Tewkesbury equalised when Jamie Goodwin scored direct from a corner. Into the second half Gifford controlled for long spells but were unable to break down a determined defence. And ten minutes from time Tewkesbury re-took the lead, the impressive Jamie Goodwin bagging his second, but, in a frenetic finish Gifford equalised on 87 minutes through Babacar Sarr and clinched victory in stoppage time with a twenty-yard drive from Harry Ford. A 4-3 Stoke Gifford win but you cannot help wondering if Tewkesbury hadn’t have had two players dismissed early on, what would have happened.

Finally, Ruardean Hill Rangers v Bishops Cleeve Development. The first chance of the game came from a well worked set piece from Ruardean Hill leads to header at the back post from Luke Brown, well saved by Cleeve keeper, Noah Sunter. In the 21st minute, Oliver Mason won the ball on the edge of the Cleeve penalty area and forces a good save at Sunter's near post. Cleeve then countered down the right through Monty New who squared to Harry Davis who opened the scoring. Cleeve then dominated the game with George Cuzner hitting the post in the 34th minute before Henry Danter-Welch volleyed home for Cleeve’s second from a corner. The Hill tried to pull a goal back before halftime but good defending from Danter-Welch to stop a cross from Oli Mason denied Steve Clark an open goal. Half time 0-2 to Cleeve.
The Hill started the second half on the attack. However, two breaks from Bishops Cleeve forced two great save from the Hill goalkeeper Arron Underwood. In the 50th minute a well worked move resulted in Steve Clark pulling a goal back from the Hill. Two minutes later, the Hill were level with a great strike from Clark from outside the 18-yard box, following good work from Oli Mason. Cleeve then made substitutions and regained control of the match. Danter-Welch pounced on a loose ball, charges forward and sees his shot from the edge of the box tipped over the bar by Underwood. In the 75th Minute, Sam Smith shot from the edge of the box, forcing a good save from Underwood but Monty New got to the loose ball first and slotted home to make the score 3-2 to the visitors. Cleeve had a chance in the 89th minute to seal the game when substitute Salehbai wass played through but his shot was straight at the keeper. The Hill equalised in the 90th minute after a Luke Brown cross was finished by Steve Clark to seal his hatrick and give Ruardean Hill a share of the points. In added time, both teams had changes saved as they pushed for the victory. The game finished 3-3. An entertaining game, well refereed and both teams gaining a deserved point.

7th September 2025 - Frampton United start Les James cup defence with Win

Mark Simpson

results

This week is the Les James League Cup sponsored by Boca Teamwear but, before we start these reports Cribbs Reserves gained their first win of the league campaign with a midweek victory against Ruardean Hill Rangers after Hill had raced into a two-goal lead. Back to the cup and a repeat of last seasons final saw Frampton United beat Henbury and Rockleaze again. And, yet another abandoned match this season this time at Stoke Gifford, it’s starting to become an epidemic.

At Arnall Drive on a pitch that is becoming greener by the day a well-drilled cup holders Frampton United were worthy winners against Henbury and Rockleaze. On only four minutes Frampton thought they had scored when Turner tapped in but, the Referee blew for a foul on Harry Trett. On 10 minutes Parker was well placed but shot high and wide. Frampton deservedly took the lead on 24 minutes when substitute Tyler Jaggers smashed the ball home after H&R failed to clear. On 35 minutes H&R had their first real sight on goal when Drew Sawdon headed narrowly wide from Nick Jones cross. Frampton started the second half strongly and hit the post through Churchley on 50 minutes, and it took just another 10 minutes for them to get their second when Theo Browne cooly slotted past Trett from inside the box. H&R huffed and puffed but apart from a dipping volley from Fraser Butt which was brilliantly saved by Tom Kaye they didn’t create anything of note and Frampton progress to round two by 2-0.

At Waterwells, Quedgeley Wanderers, who’ve had a bright start to the season took on Chalford who in turn have had a rather difficult start, but, both teams started with a strong attitude to try and open the scoring. Unfortunately, injury hit QW early when Billy Osabuiohein had to go off. Chalford’s Dan Carter had a shot on target, but it was comfortably saved by Keiran Derbyshire. QW came close when Riley Stokes shot was cleared off the line by Craig Mills and 32 minutes in Ollie Barnett had a dangerous cross into the box well claimed by Duane Portlock. The second half was much more intense as both teams were searching for the opener but it was QW’s intensity that saw Seb Keith with a great run into box earning a corner and two minutes later Alfie Pledger smashing the ball into the net from inside the box giving them a 51st minute lead. In the end a close hard fought game saw Quedgeley edge into the next round 1-0.

Having played each other in the League last Saturday it was the turn of Bromley Heath United to host Wick at Pomphrey Hill for this cup match for which a tricky wind was added into the mixture. The game started with both teams trying to find a rhythm without creating anything clear cut. On 25 minutes Wick fashioned a cross which was headed just over by Jay Rudge, and within a couple of minutes an almost repeat move saw the same player head Wick into the lead. As the half played out Bromley started to create more chances for themselves and Jake Millward came closest to getting the equaliser. Bromley started the second period on the front foot, but it was Wick who had a chance to go further in front after Bromley lost possession just inside their box, and a fierce shot by the dangerous Rudge was well saved by Will Ferguson. As the half-progressed Bromley started to create more and were rewarded when a cross from Millward was collected by Harley Lock who cooly laid the ball into the path of Ollie Hanham to hammer home. As it looked like the game might go to penalties to decide it, Wick were awarded an 80th minute penalty which was converted by the inevitable Cory Langdon. Bromley tried everything for an equaliser and came very close when Luke Bessell rattled the Wick crossbar from range. But Wick saw the game out to progress to the next round 2-1.

Totterdown United welcomed Broadwell Amateurs to Norton Lane and the pitch was in better condition as a result of much needed rain, however a strong wind swept across. Broadwell made the brighter start and were in the lead 10 minutes in – a loose ball on the edge of the box was contested and Broadwell came out on top rolling the ball to Kris Burnard who tucked it away well. The remainder of the half was scrappy with the wind playing a big part although the best chance went to Ollie Lovell who blasted wide for Totts when unchallenged. Totterdown came out of the blocks aggressively for the second half and found an equaliser five minutes in with some slick football down the left Lovell beat his full back and cut the ball back for Jack Thorley to tap home. Almost instantly a Broadwell long-throw was missed by multiple Totts players leaving Burnard to tap home for 2-1 . Still with the bit between their teeth Totts found an equaliser straight away with some quick passing through the middle Lovell was one-on-one with a Well defender and popped the ball through his legs and snuck it in the corner for 2-2. The game somewhat settled down for 10 minutes with the wind getting worse but a poor moment for a Totts defender trying to beat his man, Broadwell’s attack pounced and the ball was squared to Ethan Dunscombe who brilliantly put the ball in off the far post for 3-2. Totts huffed and puffed to find another equaliser and a glorious chance fell to Jack Hearsey at the back post but he unfortunately blazed over and that was that as the scoring went. However, not quite the end as both benches got into a petty argument which led to Isaac Suleyman seeing red for dissent. Broadwell progress 3-2.

At Northway Playing Fields Tewkesbury Town took on Filton Athletic in this first round tie and a competitive first 25 minutes ensued, with chances both ends with Town soaking up Filton pressure and even having a shot off the crossbar themselves. Town got a breakthrough when the ball fell to Tony Hoskings who slotted through a crowd of players for 1-0. Shortly after, however, defensive failings gave Filton the lead at the break. The second half was much the same with Filton scoring two more and although Town pressed Filton absorbed all of the Town attacks and played on the break. The tie ended 4-1 to Filton, their scorers Trey Merrett (2), Yousef Abdulrahman and Dan Payne.

League Cup action at Hardwicke where Tytherington Rocks took on Cribbs Reserves. The game started strongly for the Rocks and on eight minutes Ollie Briggs chased down a loose ball, with keeper Jude Brown trying to shield the ball out Briggs knocked it round and squared to Ali Al Fadhli to score. Rocks had a few chances to double their lead but almost conceded in the last few moments of the half with Jack Pullin clearing off the line. It took only four minutes of the second half for Rocks to double their lead, Briggs heading home from a corner. Briggs doubled his tally on the hour for 3-0. Cribbs eventually got on the score sheet five minutes from time Alex Craig scoring. Rocks progress 3-1.

At Hamwells Sharpness took on Hanham Athletic and it was the home side who broke the deadlock 15 minutes in when George Thomas stooped low to head in a Tainton corner. A minute later it was two – Jack Higgs chased down a back pass to David Taylor whose clearance struck Higgs and deflected into the Hanham net. Just before half time Mikey Bryant found the back of the net from inside the box to give the Sharks a 3-0 half time lead. Sharpness continued to create into the second half and 10 minutes in a deep cross from Priday found Mears unmarked at the back-post and he made no mistake volleying home for 4-0. Just past the hour it was five, Alfie Jones was brought down in the area skipping past his marker and Jones converted the resulting spot kick. Hanham did show some late fight and grabbed a couple of goals, neat build up play down the left resulted in a cross for Cjay Summerlin to score and their second came from a mix-up between Marley Thomas and keeper Dykes and Stryjewski latched onto the ball and tapped into an empty net, however too little too late and Sharpness progress 5-2.

On a sunny afternoon at the Stoke Gifford Stadium, Stoke Gifford SGS United took on Ruardean Hill Rangers for this first round tie. Nothing really happened in the opening minutes as both teams never really got to grips with the game. In the 12th minute Oscar Sealey broke free for Gifford but his shot was saved by Aaron Underwood. The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute when a poor throw in by Gifford was seized by Hill and played through to Steve Clarke who ran through to put Hill 1-0 up. The second half was all Stoke Gifford but they couldn’t find a breakthrough. Hill held firm until a dismissal led to an unfortunate melee in the 87th minute which forced the game to be abandoned.
