5th December - FA 50 year service award
Roger Bassett (Kings Stanley Secretary) receiving 50 year award from Derek Cumner
Roger Bassett Secretary of Kings Stanley Football Club was presented with a 50 year service award from the FA and it was presented at a recent Competition League Meeting by GFA Director Derek Cumner.
Roger started playing for Kings Stanley as a 16 year old way back in the 1960-61 season. He played mainly at left back and was reputed to have a cultured left foot. Most of his football was played for the Clubs first team in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League but he occasionally turned out for the reserves. His career was unfortunately ended abruptly in the early 1980s when he suffered a badly broken leg.
During the summer months Roger played Cricket for the Kings Stanley Cricket Club.
Off the field he became Chairman of the Football Club in 1969 still only in his early 20s but held that position until 1980 when he decided to step down and fill the position of Secretary for the Club. He continued in the Secretary’s roll for the next 30 years and has put a tremendous amount of effort into the Club during that period. He decided to step down to Assistant Secretary at the beginning of this season to allow a new and younger face to blend into the job, but his commitment, even now, is undying.
He still looks after all the player’s kit each week and makes sure that there are enough match footballs available for each game. He has been well supported by his wife Eileen throughout the years; this lady has washed every single kit for the last 30 years.
Now he is retired he spends more time at the ground walking the pitch and replacing divots etc, so that the pitch is kept match fit for each home game.
Back around 1985 both the Football Club and Cricket Club were looking to build a new Sports Club for Players and Spectators alike. He became Secretary of that Sports Club a position he still holds to this present day. He was one of the major figures in getting the project off the ground and in recognition the bar was officially named ‘Buffers Bar’ a nick name he acquired during his playing days.
His commitment is never ending as he also represents the Football Club on the Marling Trust Committee this is the Trust who are the owners of the land where Football and Cricket are staged in Kings Stanley.
From a League point of view Roger is the backbone of any Football Club and we congratulate him on his award and wish him many more happy years doing what he obviously loves very much.

19th August 2010 - Highridge United Football Club
The Surridge Gloucestershire County Football League is saddened to announce that Highridge United Football Club has this day withdrawn their 1st Team from the League.
The league is very disappointed to lose a Club of Highridge United standing. Since they were elected to the league in 1997, they have finished Champions on two occasions in 1999-2000 and again in 2004-2005. They also finished runners-up on five occasions. 1998-1999, 2000-2001, 2005-2006, 2007-2008 and last season 2009-2010.
The Surridge Gloucestershire County Football League Management Committee would like to wish the Club a speedy recovery and hope some day they will reach County League Football again.
As a consequence The Surridge Gloucestershire County Football League will have a vacancy for season 2011-12. This could be a very good opportunity for Clubs seeking promotion to the league who meet the criteria with regard to Ground Grading and promotion placement.
